Longest Fish Pool - Paul Argent........Thornback Ray 48cm (£24)
Round 4 saw us back at the prolific Perch Rock for the second and final time in this years Winter League and again another good turn out saw entries from 24 anglers on what was another calm and relatively mild day. Good conditions coupled with a good tide in terms of size and timings meant there were already a few people down there well before we were due to start.......................
Everyone made their way out and there was a bit of a foot race for the 'favoured' areas which is something I need to reflect on for the low water matches going forward as I do accept at some venues not being able to walk out at the same speed as others can be a disadvantage which is not how it should be so I will have a think about how we rectify this going forward. Once out on the bank everyone found space and whilst initially tight there was still another 30 minutes for the tide to drop which would allow everyone to fan out and have enough space....................
We got underway at 12:45 and straight away the Whiting were on the feed with plenty of fish hitting the beach in the 25-30cm range with the odd better one thrown in, 33cm being the best Whiting in the first 30 minutes. There was a good tide run and it just looked right for a Codling or two. For whatever reason they are not always as prolific at this mark as some others on the river however they are there to be caught when conditions are right and first man to find one was Nigel Conlon with this nice fish of 46cm....................
There were plenty of fish coming out and people finding their flat and round combinations in the form of Dabs and Whiting, Dave Phillipson doing it in one cast, along with a few others and as the action continued I then managed to find a Codling myself just a centimeter smaller than Nigel's at 45cm.........................
I had a quick change of plan to try for a Dab to get my combo before the hot time for the Rays and was lucky enough to find a Dab on my first cast and it was a decent fish of 30cm which set the total for everyone else with 2 hours of the match left to fish....................
As the run slackened off the majority of people switched to try for a Ray down to and over low water. Nigel Conlon was keeping me right under pressure taking Dab after Dab however his best was 27cm so he still needed to find a better fish, others continued to catch and there was an anticipation that someone had to find a Ray and someone did, that man was Paul Argent with this really nice Thorny of 48cm which was enough to give him the longest fish pool on the day.......................
Richie Fisher took the only Dogfish of the match along with his Dab of 26cm to put himself in the mix in the last 30 minutes and both Nigel and Paul continued to try and improve their Dab to take the win however I managed to just hang on to take what was a fish filled and enjoyable match.
No fish were seriously bothered in my section.
