Round 1 Preview -Perch Rock - Sunday 20th October
Here we go then........... This years WSF Winter League will get underway with an early start at Perch Rock. This venue can and has thrown up anything and everything in recent times. The usual Dogs, Whiting, Dabs should be present along with the chance of Thornback Rays, Codling and Flounder. The beach has also thrown up Huss and Conger recently so anything could happen!
With the usual format of the Flat/Round combo tactics will be key and so will the flat fish. Please remember the minimum size has been lowered to 20cm this Winter.
Booking on will be in the usual spot in the car park behind the fort from 06:15 to 06:45.
We will be fishing 07:15 to 11:15. Low Water is at 10:10.

Re: Round 1 Preview -Perch Rock - Sunday 20th October
Tactics for Sunday....I`ll be kicking off with sticky old lug and small razor fish baits on a two boom rig, with short hook lengths to keep the bait on the deck...moving the baits fairly frequently to try and entice a take. The flats can be difficult to find on certain days,so i`ll be concentrating on them for the first part of the match, whilst keeping an eye out to see what else is coming out.The smaller tide can make a difference from the fish filled sessions on the recent spring tides,so if dogs start to show i`ll put a sandeel/squid wrap out for one of them to get something on the board,as they can often come on the feed, then disappear,so i would`nt want to miss out.If all goes according to plan,i`ll have a flat on the board in the first couple of hours, which will allow me to concentrate on snaring a ray on a loop rig or up n over rig baited with sandeel/squid wraps.

planning a bait digging session sat night then a kip in the car ready for sunday morning, see you there.
thanks for the tips Kev. a couple of weeks ago a mate of mine had plenty of dabs and whiting using lrf tactics baited with skinny squid strips, so might be worth a try at that for a dab or flounder early on

Re: Round 1 Preview -Perch Rock - Sunday 20th October
Pretty much panned out as expected...put my boom rig out for a dab,but after seeing Ste Duffy bring in a dog i quickly put out a loop rig with sandeel/squid wraps to get one myself, then it was back on the dab hunt which thankfully did`nt take long.Getting your 2 fish means you can relax a bit,but i knew 66cm would not be good enough,so i concentrated on getting a ray, alternating between loop and up n over rigs loaded with sandeel and squid wraps....dogs were a pain so every now and again i put out lug or small razor baits to try for a bigger dab but my lug was very poor so my confidence was low....the peak ray feeding period saw Jeff and Ste Atkinson on my right get one on their cards,so i was hoping to join them, which i did towards low water....i thought my best chance of improving my 70cm was to continue to try for a bigger ray,but to no avail....not to worry as consistency is the name of the game in the winter league, and 7pts is`nt a bad start.Big Kev wrote:Tactics for Sunday....I`ll be kicking off with sticky old lug and small razor fish baits on a two boom rig, with short hook lengths to keep the bait on the deck...moving the baits fairly frequently to try and entice a take.
