Best Specimen Fish Pool - Adam Roper - 52cm Thornback Ray - 275 Points (£25)

This years WSF Summer League got underway at a fabulously mild and sunny Perch Rock. A great turn out saw 25 anglers looking to open their accounts and get some points on the board.

A change in format this summer to SAMF length to points conversion was again explained at booking on to ensure that everyone knew the format and how it worked and once everyone was armed with their SAMF charts, which had been expertly produced by Dyl, we were ready for the off...................

Image

All in quickly came around and we were underway for another Summer. The first half an hour saw plenty of fish coming onto the sand bank in the form of Whiting in the 20 something cm range which saw fish in the mid-teen points range making the scorecards.

After half an hour or so the first Dog's made an appearance and at 50 points for fish they were much sought after however nobody was able to find them in great numbers and put a string of them together to build a score, but rather half the field were able to find one or two. Paul Tucker managed 3 on his card which was the best anyone could muster on the Dog front.

I was myself struggling after the first hour and I was falling behind a number of the lads in terms of numbers of fish so I decided to switch to the couple of fresh crab I had. Second cast with crab produced the goods in the form of this very welcome 52cm Thornback Ray which in this format was worth its weight in points........................

Image

There were a few lads catching plenty of fish, Roy Schofield was again showing his consistency on home territory ticking his card over with single and double shots, Rob Turner keeping pace with him whilst Dylan Kensall, Roberts junior and senior, Paul Tucker and Dave Radcliffe were also in hot pursuit.

Rays value on the SAMF conversion chart meant that they were at a premium and they would prove to be decisive in the overall result. Rob Turner was the next man to find one and that put him right up in contention with an hour or so to go however it was to by Dylan Kensall who would take the final Ray of the match at 44cm....................

Image

This fish's points when added to Dyl's card was enough to give him an unassailable lead with half an hour to go and he would hold of myself in second place and Dave Roberts who couldn't find a Ray but still found his way into the money on sheer numbers of fish caught.

Overall a cracking start to this years Summer League and great to see some new faces yet again as well as the regular lads. Roll on Round 2................
