Mono or braid as replacement

Hollo I'm after replacing the line on my reel & not sure what to get new mono or braid I have heard braid is the better so can any 1 give me advice pls and would I need a backing line with braid also what strength to get thanks

Both braid and mono has its place. Depends on what you plan on fishing for and where.

Braid comes into its own when fishing for smaller fish and your looking to spot the tinniest bites and its suppler than mono of the same BS so flies through the rings easier if your using a fixed spool reel. The ground you fish over should also be taken into consideration, mixed/rough ground will soon take its toll on braid, some people fish 60lb braid straight through or use it as a shockleader but by fishing with a normal mono shock leader you can increase abrasion resistance. Fishing heavy braid straight through can be handy though to combat weed as there is no leader knot for it to catch on. The thinner diameter of braid also helps to reduce wind/tidal influences on the line aswel.

I'm a lover of braid and will use it wherever possible, I use low BS mono say 4lbish to back my spools as they are only shallow but if I was putting braid onto a deeper spool I'd just use whatever spool ends I had to fill it out.

PS never pull on a wind knot, gently does it

I use braid all time it costs my £6 on eBay 30 pound right through
And they are 300 yard spools I change it every 4 months it's great
Never had any problems it comes straight from Japan had my last lot on all summer
And still going strong you Cannot beat it don't use it for plugging though I use specialist braid for that

There are two main types of braid generally used which are woven or fused.
The woven type are like thick cotton to look at and the quality varies from good to rubbish,the main judge of quality is the number of tucks per inch when the braid is manufactured which dictates how it performs.The woven type for example Power Pro,Whiplash etc. are generally thinner than fused braids and less resistant to abrasion,you can get problems with breaking strains less than 30lb digging in on the reel causing snatching on the cast.
Fused braids like Fireline,Spiderwire etc.tend to be a little thicker but more durable although they feel a little "wirey" when new they soften with use.
No braid likes knots and you can lose up to half the breaking strain with a poor knot,the only knot I feel safe using is a Palomar as I have had the best results with that one.
