ABU 6500 GR question.

Post by Blue topaz »

Hi

been using the little multiplier today and it squeels when casting and I cant get it past about 60 yards. There is a slide on the arc perimeter for the magnetic brake which when fully open reads 10 and closed down to 0. I tried different settings and to be honest it didn't make that much difference though at 10 it was louder and even less casting distance. I have unscrewed the round knob beneath the star brake again not a massive difference in the cast but does slow the drag down .I have also pinged off a square cover on the side and with a screwdriver moved that around a dial in both directions. The reel is like new so I am convinced its me so would really appreciate any advice on settings.

Thanks in advance

Mike

I know nothing about that particular reel, but are there any brake blocks on that reel, If so how many are engaged? The level wind reels don't cast as far as the none level wind reels.

The 6500GR was my first Abu multi years ago. Cracking little reel it was too. I'm pretty sure it only has mag brakes. Your issue could be a number of things. The GR was discontinued years ago and so it will be a fair few years old. The noise could possibly be due to congealed oil in the bearings, worn bearings, a warped spindle, pitted spool rim. It would benefit from a service which most decent angling stores will offer and it's not costly, but you will have a cracking little reel once it's running properly.

Get it down to Peter Coogan in Moreton for a service and it will come back as good as new.

Is the right answer. Also, get him to take the level wind off, (Unless it's already been modded.) ;)
