I use the Gemini Genie Rotton Bottom Links.
Cannot remember them failing me when I have used them.

My feeling is that they are ok when it is just the weight that is stuck -- Duh !! Daft Statement !!!Obviously !!
Some of the time though, it is not the weight that is stuck, but a crab has dragged your hook link off under a rock, so it is that is stuck, and your hook link is likely to be a lot stronger than your 'rottom bottom' line and stronger than your main line so your leader knot is the weak link !!
I guess most people us 20lb or 25lb hook lengths and 12-15lb main lines with shockleader, if you really want to utilise Rotton Bottoms I guess you need to use 30lb mainline with no shockleader, then you have a fighting chance of getting your terminal tackle back with a fish on -- if you doing that then you will not be distance casting, I guess.
Anyway -- I have babbled on enough !!

good advise jp .i will be in guernsey mainly fishing for wrasse and gars so i will be useing 25lb main line and i wont be distance casting well hope not
the island of hern is a rock session mark so float and light ledger rigs are the norm .i was thinking 15lb main snoods and rotton link line say 5lb. there will be some lost rigs as you say crabs tide ect taking snoods into cracks ect .but those links will cut that down to a minimum cheers jags
if ure not going to be casting, i wouldnt bother with a clip at all, its just another thing on the rig that can get snaged up. like blnaker said, an overhand knot, or just a piece of line form a small swivel straight to the lead, will work.
make sure the weak line is long enough to raise the rig body/ hooks etc far enough of the sea floor to avoid the majority snags.

hi jags, here's one i use,
by putting a swivel at the bottom of your rigs they can quickly changed to rotten bottoms

remove the lead link and replace with a thingy link, tied to a loop of lighter line
<a href="http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h52/brockster_2006/?action=view¤t=rottenbottom002.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h52/brockster_2006/rottenbottom002.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
the loop goes through the eye of the lead, and then over.
then the lead hangs on the sticky outy bit on the upside down thingy link if you need to cast it
yes i know all the line i used is bright yellow, and 60lb before ya all start

Problem with that is you looking at maybe a 10 or 15lb line link to your weight, to be less than your hooklink.wfsangler wrote:if ure not going to be casting, i wouldnt bother with a clip at all, its just another thing on the rig that can get snaged up. like blnaker said, an overhand knot, or just a piece of line form a small swivel straight to the lead, will work.

If you got a 5 or 6 oz weight to hold bottom, attached to a 10 or 15lb line, if you not got something like a Gemini Clip you not casting out at all, your weight going to still be on the beach or wall at best, or heading towards someone at worst.
I would never dream of casting any of my rigs out without a rottom bottom clip or no clip at all ( and I have £100,000 public liabilty insurance anywhere in the world, through BLAS ).
Only exception might be if i dropping straight down a dock or a wall, but then if you are, you not need a rotten bottom or a weak link as you should not be snagged as you will feel the bait and weight all way down and up and if you snag, you not concentrating !!!!

correct jp i have the same liability ins.on principle my lead will always be on the clip whichever i use to take the casting waight.i will be taking all senarios with me
ive got a great general idea now
and made up with the imput of this rig question. witch will help others like me who wasnt to shure of how use or make a good rotton bottom rigs .as its not featured in the rig section it would be helpful if it could be included. as its a good rig to include cheers jp jags
as long as the casting is smooth and progressive, a gentle overhand/underhand chuck is no problem at all, even less so again if using light ledgering gear. . rough ground rigs should be as simple as you can get away with to avoid snags, meaning cutting back on un-nesccesary clips, swivels, beads etc. also keeps the rig components as small as possible.John Petersen wrote:Problem with that is you looking at maybe a 10 or 15lb line link to your weight, to be less than your hooklink.wfsangler wrote:if ure not going to be casting, i wouldnt bother with a clip at all, its just another thing on the rig that can get snaged up. like blnaker said, an overhand knot, or just a piece of line form a small swivel straight to the lead, will work.

if any distance is required, defo stick a gemini or similar on. the gemini's can even be modified to act as a hook, for clipped down rigs.

;)jags pully rigs work very well
with a 20lb clip link onto your lead/spark plug that the maggot drowners use instead of a 80lb gemini clip
your rig body is still 50lb/60lb the clip will give way first before your pully rig and if it is your hook thats stuck then the hook lenth will go.
the + to using this method is you can cast it (light/genral lob) and if you have fish on then it pulls the lead away from the snags ;)most important its safe for other anglers around you .

do you need a scaffold i can supply and erect tube and fitting/mobile fixed pasma scaffolds
