Grey's G-Series Uptider Rod

Post by History »

I've never been very keen on Grey's rods because there no good, I’ve never borrowed one or bought one, because there no good!
I’ve ended up with a Grey’s G-Series 6/10ozs ... 9.5ft Uptider rod, because I won it in a draw, thought I’d try one out and if as expected it wasn’t any good, at least it wouldn’t have cost me anything to find out, that they are no good!
I might be wrong but I think Grey’s was taken over sometime back by Hardy Rods, and they are very good rods, I own a couple, but Grey’s rods aren’t, there no good.
I was going to move it on, because it’s a Grey’s rod and I think they aren’t an expensive rod so that was the reason I kept it, couldn’t be bothered messing about with the carriage costs just for a few quid rod and a Grey’s one at that.
Fished the river today, fishing wasn’t anything out the ordinary, but the Grey’s G-Series rod was something out the ordinary, as a yard stick I compared it to the Abu Suveran and Daiwa TDX uptiders, and the Greys is a far nicer rod to use than the Abu Suveran Uptider, though not in the league of the TDX .... I was pleasantly surprised at this rod, it’s a really nice boat casting rod. It’s light but relatively powerful, though not tested on any great sized fish today. It would fall in between the action of an Abu Conolon and a Daiwa TDX Uptider.
If it had a couple of extra eyes fitted to the blank it would help the blank to work a bit more efficiently, but that’s just my thoughts, and it doesn’t detract from the fact that I was wrong and this rod is well worth considering, what they cost new I’m not sure, think it might be around the £40 mark, but I could be a bit out on the price.
Abu Suveran Uptider or Grey’s G-Series Uptider, I’d go for the Grey’s, by far the nicer rod .... beats the broom pole lifeless Suveran any day, all really depends on the price I suppose, but they are nice rods to fish with, can’t see my Suveran Uptider having another outing this year.
