So the first match of 2020 and the penultimate round of this years Winter League saw us back at Perch Rock. With the time of year not ideal for this venue and the tide a very small one we were expecting a challenging four hours but that is match fishing and it is the same for everyone.
The water took longer than normal to drop away from the Fort however we eventually got out onto the sand and got lined up. All in was called at 09:30 and the match got underway.
The weather was again kind to us and it was a lovely morning to be out on the bank as the sun rose behind the city skyline..................
The first 30 minutes were slow as expected however the odd fish did hit the bank with Whiting being the only fish to be seen. With us fishing further up the bank than normal there was very little tide run not the depth of water there usually would be however people were starting to catch. Dave Roberts was the first man to get a Whiting and a Dab onto his card, closely followed by Rob Turner however the majority of people were still struggling and there were a lot of people only on a single fish.
As the halfway point was reached the fish finally came on the feed in better numbers with Whiting and Dabs now being plentiful along the stretch with single and double shots being taken by most people on most casts. Interestingly the majority of fish were being taken relatively close in with those fishing at distance not seeing anywhere near the same level of action....................
It was now a numbers game with all of the Whiting in the 28-32cm bracket apart from the odd bigger fish which would prove crucial. Rob Turner found the best one of the day at 35cm to take the longest fish pool and also put him on the way to the match win on the day with a total of 60cm, closely followed by Mark Davies and Dale Edwards in joint second with 59cm. It was a day for fine margins with 15 of the 16 anglers taking a flat and a round combo and the top ten places only separated by 6cm.
We now head to Vale Park for the final round and the conclusion of this years Winter League.
