Round 2 Result and Report

A competitive yet informal set of matches in and around the Mersey. With only 2 fish to count,it`s a good way to get in to match angling.

Longest Fish Pool - Andy Booth..........Conger Eel 70cm (£27)

Round 2 of this years WSF Winter League saw us at Otterspool in search of Codling plus anything of any other species or variety for the two fish combination on the card.

Another fantastic turnout including some more new faces saw 27 anglers pay their money to take their chance on what was initially a calm and pleasant morning on the Mersey.

We fished the stretch from the pumphouse at the bottom of the path down to the jetty and as we walked off everyone chose their space. A few of us including myself, Jeff White, Ste Atkinson, Dylan Kensall and Tony Holland made the long trek down to the jetty and got set up. Andy Booth and Tony Royal were around the black anchor with Dave Roberts and Stu Davies half way between the anchor and the jetty to name a few. There were WSF anglers positioned along the whole stretch as well as a few other pleasure anglers.................

Image

All in came at 10:30 and peoples baits were deposited into the murky water. As predicted it was a 39cm Codling on the first chuck for Ste Atkinson down to my left by the jetty......................

Image

I missed bites myself on the first two casts, bumping one Codling off and losing the second in the snags however thankfully it was third time lucky with this 43cm fish..................

Image

Sadly the fast start was short lived and was not replicated up the stretch where the majority were struggling and many had not even had a bite 90 minutes in.

Due to the rarity of flat fish at this venue the rules have been amended to allow the two best fish of any species and everyone was therefore focusing on Codling and Whiting as their best chance of getting two fish on their card however the Whiting were few and far between with only a handful of anglers finding them. Tony Holland got in on the Codling action with a 39cm fish and then found a Whiting to go with it to be the first angler to get two fish on his card however things then turned completely on their heads as Andy Booth went from blanking to effectively winning the match in a 10 minute period taking a 36cm Codling followed by this strap Conger of 70cm......................

Image

From this point everyone was effectively fishing for 2nd place and I managed to find a Whiting on my final cast to take 2nd with Tony Holland 3rd. Overall a really tough day at the office with only 5 of 27 anglers finding 2 fish for their cards and 15 from 27 recording a fish.

We now move straight into Round 3 at Vale Park this Sunday...............

Great report as ever Adam and well done Andy

Not a sniff down by the jetty and my first ever blank at the venue, although Adam had his two fish and a pleasure angler next to the jetty had a 41cm fish also

A few guys turned up at about 2pm and fished the other side of the jetty and had codling and a strap conger, that i could see

Ah well, that's 20 Crab, squid and a pack of Dave Roberts finest worms i wont get back :). May as well been using luncheon meat and sweetcorn!

Roll on Vale Park!
Only here for the cod!

Nicely reporte d Adam , well done to the winners and also rans it was very pleasant to start with but a grim afternoon.I would have blanked but Adam kindly gave me a crab on his way to the whiting patch which I got my only bite and only fish of the day so thanks for that.
Then two others gave me some werms, razors and sandeel for midweek and I scooped a tub of shrimps for tea so thanks guys, there really is a great friendly spirit in this club. You cant find a better bunch of blokes than you lot.

See you at Vale for the proper codwalloping session
