quality surf reel

Hi all,

Can any body help please ,

I'm going to buy a good quality fixed spool reel and been looking at two reels in particular :
Daiwa tournament 4500QA
Shimano ultegra 14000 XSD

anybody use these reels and happy with them? any problems ?
What if any are the advantages of either reel and is the Daiwa justified in the double price tag ?

You could buy a few Penn Surfblasters for those prices.I have been using the Penn S/B 7000 for the last 3 years.Can't fault it.Does exactly the same job as the 2 you mentioned.

I would go for the XSD, I've got a XSC and its been spot on. Daiwa have a poor record for reel after sales service / repair, from what I hear.

Dave funny you should say that reel the aero surf is the one I originally wanted but can't find one in uk - seems to be loads for sale in Japan but no retailers of lots of the fancy models here in U.K.??

Hi Kris,
The new XSD has slow oscillation which gives better line lay. It also has quick drag and comes with a spare spool and spool reducers.
The Shimano JDM reels are not easy to get hold of. I got my Super Aero from Gerrys. I'm sure if you give them a call they might be able to help.

The old Surfblasters along with the the rest of that range have all been replaced with new reels bearing the same names +2 just to confuse things.
Looking at the price range £100/125 the Spinfisher v looks bombproof and is currently the best of the Penn reels available and are fully waterproof Penn have a UK based service centre.

Daiwa have their own service centre at their offices in Scotland and are known to be one of the best in the trade but are not the cheapest although they hold stocks of common parts it can take a while to get stuff that is sourced from Japan if available.The Tournament series of reels has been around for a long time but they are sold mainly as Big Pit Carp reels but something from the Crosscast or Windcast series would be better for sea fishing.

Shimano no longer have a dedicated spares service for the UK at Felindre in Swansea and are opening one up at their offices but I was told everything will go through the European centre in Holland,I dont know if this is true but time will tell.

Any of the above reels in the £100/£125 price bracket will do the job you require so it comes down to personal preference as they are all good.

Did you pay duty from them ? If so do you remember the rate as I see there are all different rates dependant on what you buy from Japan

Think I payed VAT 20% of value in pounds, approx £9 in import duty and a £12 handling charge. Best thing to do is drop them an email and they should be able to tell you. I've been lucky in the past and have not been charged any extras!
The gear is well worth it in my opinion..
