The Chinese supermarket in Liverpool, WH Lung has 1lb blocks of squid in after having a bit of a shortage. Not cheap at £4.25 each. More than double the normal price.

They can keep them at that price. I paid £1-70 at the Thai C&C junc 3 on M53.

Must have been a hard season for the squid boats. Supply and demand etc but a £6 a box someone somewhere is going to be squids in.

£6 a box FFS!! I'll be using cuttle instead this winter. Its still pretty cheap from the fish market on Prescot Road.

There has been no fresh stock for months as an after effect of the El Nino weather pattern in the States which prevents the small boats that fish for the squid we use mostly reaching them as they move offshore.
I was told to expect £5 a box until Xmas then the new stuff should reduce the price as time goes on.The stuff for sale now is mostly older stock that people have hung on to knowing the price would go through the roof.
The bigger European squid and the small Indian or Chinese party squid as it is sometimes called are unaffected by El Nino but the price has still gone up on these because the shortage of Calamari has meant the restaurant trade has been buying it all up.

Thai cash and carry at J3 M53, went there Monday 22/8/16, they haven't had any boxes of squid for over 6 months, she told me there's a world wide shortage! so went to Chinese Supermarket in Liverpool,, no stock there either..

I bought the last 10 boxes I have 6 for sale @ £17-82.

I went to my local chinese warehouse squid used to be £165 per lb box now its £4.75 per box so I bought a bag of squid tubes at £4. 55 and got a kilo of instead of a lb
Dont think it will be as good but it will have to do for tipping off

I've seen those squid tubes Oz.They look too clean.I'm sure they've been bleached and have no real smell.
