Fixed spool & braid

Hi, I have just bought a tronixpro viper GT and took it out today for its first cast, I found it a decent casting rod Although I haven't used a fixed spool in anger for a few years after a few casts I was getting some decent distance.
But I would like to try a braided reel as I hear it's a much better set up, I'm using a penn surf master at the moment which seems ok! But doesn't have a shallow spool for braid, would I be better to get a new reel with shallow spool or will the deeper spool on my surfmaster be ok?

The reason brail spools are shallow is because of the difference in diameter for any given breaking strain, between braid and mono.
To fill a mono spool with braid could use far more yards than you require;
however, half fill the spool with mono backing; and you'll still have enough room for the braid you need.

Buy a spool of Chinese powerpro 80lb braid off ebay.300yrds for a fiver.No leader needed.2 years in I'm still on the same spool.

Great advice cheers lads I'll take a look now.
Also I don't want to stop using my multiplier so any advice on a lightish surf rod about 13-14 foot with an action similar to the continental style?
