Dog Balls

Just a bit of feedback regarding the pump seals made from foam dog balls. I normally use the hard silicone seals either purchased or home made. Took a trip to Pets at Home in Aintree and located the foam balls at £1 each.

I made a couple of seals for the slimline alvey and also the slimline Kimera which is a couple of mm wider. The results were very impressive in terms of the suction and force required to pull the handle.

Compared to the silicone seal I found that the handle was very easy to pull and yet the level of suction was very strong when tested on my hand and with the pump upside down.

One thing I did learn is that it is important to get the hole central when pushing onto the pull handle, if too far off centre it appears to place the SS washer against the side of the pump and this obviously increases friction.

Not yet tried them out or trained the dog to pick the pump up but will feedback next time out, thanks to all those that contributed to the original thread.

I have the slim alvey bought it brand new! Do i need to fit the dog ball or leave it standard?

I don't know what am doing ? I will prob end up damaging it

Jay, I persevered for a couple of sessions with the standard alvey washers, but the pump was stiff to use. I then tried a silicone washer but that wasn’t much better. I’d heard about using a dog ball bung but hadn’t given it much consideration until I went to Ainsdale with Kev and a few others, and Keith G very kindly gave me a dog ball bung. I fitted it and it has TOTALLY transformed my pump. More suction and far far less effort needed to use it. I used it for the first time a few weeks back and managed my best haul to date of over 80 worms. My previous best was 40 odd.

I’d totally recommend buying a couple of dog balls and making some bungs. Or next time I see you I’ll bring one for you to try. I won’t use anything else from now on.

Agree Big Kev did explain it well and I followed the written guidance, as a lecturer I know that images can help as a training aid so If no one else does it first I would be happy to take some sequential images of the process, will need to pick up another couple of balls.

I was going to go pumping last time but the mrs's nan got took into hospital so i was unable to go! Shame i bought it new and never really used it

LOL Don't think those plums will make a good seal, too many hairs and will probably shrink and rise up the pump in the cold weather!
