Planning a short session at the Alt this Thursday for about four/five hours from mid morning.
I've never fished there bofore. I have some well smelly Black lugg in freezer and some fresh Rag.
I'm planning to fish very light, fresh water tackle [med feeder 10lb line] :l

The tide's a bit small for Alt Thursday

Having just wasted a session can I clarify other potential Alt visitors - the estuary is quite shallow and has no water around low tide just a couple of feet or so, after low tide it continued to drain for several hours so it will not be fishable until I guess a couple of hours before high water say 3 hours at best we arrived at 1040 (LT 1115) and left at 1430 with no sign of incoming tide this near to the drain - 3/400 yds from boat club which is closed as it is off season for the stick and rag boyos I did ask the question about launching boats but thats a nonstarter - members only. You could of course wander off downstream to the seaward end across the flats frankly its too far for me to contemplate and there are plenty of patches of sticky mud on the way Oh and I didnt see a single wormcast so packing the pump was a total waste of effort

Ditto Del, not a bite in four hours.
I arrived too early as the river was still dropping at 10.30am. It was well past 12noon before I saw any change. The book said high water was 1530hrs.
I to walked up as far as the waste outlet.
When do the fish normally arrive

I found better fishing at Alt are between 28+ to 30 footer tides.Too small tides you don't have much water,too big you got push right back if there's a rough weather

Fish about 2 to 3 hrs before high depends the size of tide

friday we are going again small problem struggling to get any frozen black lug in S Manchester

I tried Stockport (edgely) Wythenshawe Poynton and Ashton u L so if you have any ideas or even out oldham way please throw me a bone here. pity I'm not doing any deliveries out the wirral I bet Chris has got bucket loads . I pm'd Kev to ask is it normal for a bait pump to lose suction every other hole its got plenty of oil? this explains why I aint got no lug

thanks for the thought Dave I had the same one late last night

Sorted I checked the dealers list and found one out Preston which I would be passing this morning and he had some . I got a PM from Kev and we are going to get out there and see what is happening I had a list of possibilties and the washer is one but it is a new pump so really shouldnt be a problem still kev will know

ifs its a new pump the washer will not have gone there is a nut at the bottom turn this to tighten it do it in stages till it as enough suction to much and you will be pumping all sand and not be able to push it out if it still loosens the nut is unscrewing its self on every pump change it to a locking nut this will work

the baits were untouched we tried mackie, mackie and black , mackie and peeler.black on its own Bit of a downer such a lovely day warm and bright almost no wind of and to finish it off Chris gave his camera a salt water bath

so he is less than impressed

Caldy well we seem to be doing diddley squat elsewhere so I might just give it a try there can you give me some more info like best state of tide and maybe where abouts the better marks would be (cheeky aint I

we had a look down there a month or so back am I right in thinking access is down the flight of concrete steps off the cul de sac or should we be looking more up towards the yacht club

You can fish either to the left or the right of the steps.It is rocky to the left
and some times a bit snaggy but this seems to be the best area for the plaice.You can normally start around 2 hours before highwater,or even earlier if you don't mind walking out a bit.On the bigger tides the water comes in at a fair old pace and sometimes its better just getting up on top
of the rocks and setting up.I would usually fish a simple 1 up 1 down rig
with 2/0 fine wire mustard blues.A grip lead is needed most times.If you fish downriver at Melloncroft Drive (see multimap),about 400yds down,you
can fish without grips.Rag/lug or rag/mack cocktails work well around the Caldy area.Peeler works well once the fish have been in the river for some time.
