You can use single worms if you want....i often do if i feel the need to get as much distance as poss`......east to west fresh is best, but one of the plus points about using frozen lug (it`s all i`ve used so far this winter) is because it is a lot softer you can squeeze 4 or 5 good size worms on a pennel rig optimising your scent trail ;) Your next step is to learn how to pump your own worms then you don`t worry about how many you`re using in a session

The best rig ... http://www.wirralseafishing.co.uk/forum ... =56&t=4430

when a fish is hooked the weight of the fish pulls the lead out of the way of any snags this resulting in a nice codo hopefully ;)

Crabs are allways about and will rob bait
Just give your opinion Jack and let people make up their own minds.....leave out the "that`s carp" and "this is the best"....you don`t do yourself any favours by talking like that
I know that it’s what ever the angler is happy with but as i have said that’s what makes me happy and confident that i am going to catch fish ;)

I do appreciate that this is people's personal opinions and I have to make up my own mind. I am grateful to anyone who can be bothered to give me advice.

Yes... you are right, I need to pump bait. Lugworms are expensive!

My husband already thinks I've gone soft in the 'ead with this fishing lark. He'll think I've finally lost it if I go out sucking up worms! On the other hand, my 5 year old daughter would love it! She loves worms and stuff.

Anneee

ps Before I am warned I know bait collection may be dangerous and am not about to try to drown my daughter or me for the sake of worms!

no sorry I didn’t mean that i phrased that wrong  i meant pumping lug doesn’t need to be dangerous as you don’t have to go far out for blow lug beds. An example of this is Derby pool and most of the beach is flat and if you go a couple of hours before low it’s even safer

ffj there is loads of things you got to take in to consideration when going out on any beach be it a short walk or a mile day or night
lack of knowledge of the beach venue
tides
gullies
winds
soft mud
fog
rain
snow
these are just a few examples

;) here is a question for you. would you be able to know which way you are facing when you are pumping/digging worm if thick fog set in ;) (trust me visibility could be clear one minute then down to zero the next minute)

from formby ainsdale i know of a good few lads from this site alone that have got lost trying to find there way back to the car park .

imho pumping or collecting your own fresh bait is dangerous on any beach look at the lives that have been lost or near misses and tell there families that it is not dangerous.
do you need a scaffold i can supply and erect tube and fitting/mobile fixed pasma scaffolds

I understand that and as I said in previous post I phrased it wrong

I always take a compass if I am going far out pumping as you can easily lose your way in the fog is there is any. Also if you are heading far out pumping then you are best finding a feature near where you gained access to the beach to navigate back to That’s if there’s no fog.

At some places like Derby pool, West Kirby marine lake, Moreton and some other beaches are fairly safe too

At Derby pool, West Kirby marine lake and Moreton Its fairly safe as you don’t need to go out far to get to lug beds no more than 20 yards for West Kirby and Moreton and probably 100 yrds for Derby pool. You could get easily cut off at Moreton if you went far out but you don’t really need to. If you wanted to play it really safe you could pump only on the ebb for lug then you can’t get cut off by the tide. For most places on the Wirral there isn’t much mud apart from around the groins on the pumping and digging venues. ;)

As much as you may not like it, I think Jack has a point that collecting worm isn't too dangerous in certain circumstances, like Derby Pool 500 yards away from the car park, but Bren is right that you can easily get caught out on any beach if unprepared.

Blimey, I missed all this!

I was fishing Sat at Town Hall Steps (again!!) with my frozon lug/mackeral/squid. People next to me had a 3 lb cod on fresh lug dug up that morning at Derby Pool. Caught on his daughter's rod as well and she was only just clearing the railings with her cast! Just shows you don't always need to cast far!

Anyway, he swore by fresh lug- what do we reckon. Does it make a big difference over frozen? Or is that a stupid question?

frozen will defo catch- some people will take fresh and frozen and old lug to a venue because if one doesnt work another might do, we will take all three and blow lug also. Some people who are good anglers swear that frozen outfishes fresh at certain times and I have found this to be true. Others will use frozen as an excuse when they dont catch. You should keep rigs simple, clip down for extra distance especially if not a very good caster yet, match bait size to hook size and vary rigs to find the fish, rolling leads, flat leads grip leads, they can be under your feet or far out, again comes with experience, and reading the state of the tide and the size of the tide and weather conditions etc... Its a science - practice and you will improve  you learn by doing at this game.
