Hook length.........how to?

I have been building my own rigs for years. When it comes to tying a line to an exact length e.g. between a swivel and a hook when the hook needs to reach a clip, I find that as I tie my knot......clinch, blood or whatever, the knot itself (or pulling it tight) alters my intended length. I can always get close to what I want, but not always exact. Anyone got any advice please?

put the swivels beads and crimps on the line with the snoods attached to the swivels so the run loose then crimp one in place attach the second hook to the clip/cascade swivel and move the crimp to the correct place with the correct tension and crimp in place.- simples
for example - simple 1 hook clip down rig. put onto the rig body all the bits top swivel 1 crimp 1 bead 1 swivel 1 bead 1 crimp in that order then the bottom swivel/clip/imp cut the snood to the length required attach to the swivel, you now have everything moving. Clip the hook to the imp, slide the crimps up the rig body until it is tensioned against the imp and crimp in place the bottom crimp job done crimp top crimp.

Thank you all for the advice..............it is what I actually do when I build a rig. Thanks for the PM John (it was was for a phone chat so obviously the number was not posted for the world to see on the internet)

I should have been clearer........It was on already built rigs that I have the problem. Being lazy and not replacing or rebuilding the whole rig, I sometime just replace the line to the hook (that's where the problem is) It's not the end of the world with an impact shield as I always build them so they have adjustment.

So ............is there a way or a knot which can be tied to a require length..........in not its no problem, just thought I might be missing something obvious

If you use sliding stop knots instead of crimps you can easily alter things....i tie my sliders pretty tight so they can be moved if you want but still stay in place when casting....they are never as secure once they`ve been moved so i just add another right next to the original for extra security.

If you use sliding stop knots instead of crimps you can easily alter things....i tie my sliders pretty tight so they can be moved if you want but still stay in place when casting....they are never as secure once they`ve been moved so i just add another right next to the original for extra security.

it has got to be old pole elastic much better for moving up line than power gum

Most sea anglers will have old pole elastic in their boxes even a number 2 elastic will be too thick any road up.....

No, what I mean is use crimps to tie off your snood instead of using knots. That way you can make your hook length any size you want with 100% accuracy

Thats far from the truth with a number 2 elastic i use 12 amd make a nice neat slideing stop knot. Also it is very cheap you can pick up some in a 5meter lenth for less than a fiver. The stop knots that i make with 12 elastic are good as they are very firm . In fact last night i was using them on a pennle and my snood line snapped off so i had to tie a new hooklenth which was easy because i didnt have to be acurate as you can just slide the elastic either up or down the line.
