Round 8 Result and Report

A competitive yet informal set of matches in and around the Mersey. With only 2 fish to count,it`s a good way to get in to match angling.

So this years Winter League came to a conclusion at a very cold, calm and foggy morning at Vale Park. With the overall title, top three finish and the match win on the day all up for grabs everyone was looking forward to getting out on the bank.

That enthusiasm was tempered somewhat as the tide took an absolute age to ebb and due to the fog we were also struggling to see how far it had gone out. Visibility was down to around 50-60 yards and when we did all eventually get out I walked back as far as I could to take a picture without the black dots disappearing...........................

Image

We got underway in the very eerie conditions and it was a somewhat predictably slow start with the smaller tide leaving us in shallower water at the start of the match. Very few fish were taken in the first hour but first man off the mark was Tony Holland with a small Flounder whilst down the far right hand side of the stretch Richie Fisher and Roy Schofield were both into some Whiting early on.

Any hopes of seeing some Codling were fading by 90 minutes in as were the hopes of the sun being able to burn the mist and fog away as it was still as thick as ever out on the bank.....................

Image

There was one unfortunate incident with a very inconsiderate and frankly idiotic small boat angler, who we have now identified from the name of his boat 'Wimps' as being from Prestatyn sailing club. This clown was motoring up river no more than 30 yards from the waters edge and despite seeing a full line of anglers on the bank continued to just plough straight through 17 anglers lines. He just stared at everyone whilst doing it.

I did not manage to get any fish pictures due to the conditions plus everyone knows what Whiting and Dabs look like and 90 mins before low they came on the feed in better numbers. People now started to catch regularly and it was again going to be a match of fine margins both in terms of who would take the win on the day and who would take the top 3 places in the overall league standings.

Richie Fisher found a Dab to go with his 35cm Whiting to set the bar at 60cm and this would prove to be enough for him to take the match win by a single centimeter from Dale Edwards and Roy Schofield in joint second place with 59cm each.

As for the overall standings, we retired to the Eggy Ferry pub for the meal, calculations and presentation, see the other thread for the final results.
