Match Report: Mersey Anglers Open, Otterspool Promenade, Liverpool, 22 Feb 2014 (55 rods)
Otterspool fished very well for most of the anglers, even though trying to put up any kind of shelter proved quite a difficult task in the strong S/SW winds.
Morecambe’s Dave Hutchinson drew peg 62 in the ‘funnel’ area (this landmark has actually now been removed) and recorded a measure and release haul of 26 small codling for 642 cms, his longest fish being 28cms. Runner-up Joe Perry also managed 26 fish from the less favoured upriver Zone A, missing the win by a mere 20cms.
Fresh or frozen crab seemed to be the main bait again for the small codling although white rag and maddies also caught fish.
There was a tie between the Hughes brothers, Mike & Gary, on pegs 51 and 55 in Zone D. Both had 16 fish for 388cm: Mike’s 36cms flounder gave him the verdict.
The 31 competitors who submitted cards registered 365 codling, 4 whiting, 4 flounders, and a single rockling.
Many thanks to all who took part, especially Andy Dawkins and Chris Isaac who travelled a long way to compete,
