I use a wide variety of different tackle and while the long rod , fixed spool , braid combination can give great distance they can and do have drawbacks. I have been using long rods for over 12 years now and have used many different models . I would suggest you save more money and buy towards the top end yuki rods if you are looking at using it regular on the Mersey. As a suggestion why not try a fixed spool loaded with braid with your current rods? A instant way of increasing distance is to decrease line diameter. On some of my long rods , I use 20 lb whiplash which is 0.06mm diameter, to this I attach a 65lb or 80 lb whiplash braid leader. Having tried tapered leaders and suffering from countless snap offs I switched to braid leaders and haven't snapped off once since. With a simple overhead thump it flies , with a swing its out of sight!. You can use Braid with a multiplier for casting but it involves an advanced retrieve system that is hard work to perfect
Ps were you going fishing today , going through the wallaby tunnel about 10am?
I wish I was going fishing yesterday Steve, but no I was in work !! :(

whistleing sands wrote:same old same old here in my honest opinion and fishing experience people wanting to expand their fishing skills and catch rates get drawn down this road of distant casting thinking they will catch more wrong ?

i think the best way to catch more fish is to put more time into understanding the area you intend to fish tides features etc i have mentioned this before / been fishing more times than i can mention and anglers come over and say it hasn't fished well tonight ---- they just turn up on a beach or rock mark and get the rods out rig up and launch the whole thing as far as they can without even knowing what is out there or what fish they are targeting .

and as for your rod and terminal tackle you can,t just use the same thing for every situation it will depend on the fish you target and geography of the beach
every venue has its own demands and problems to solve to get the best out of them .

every beach has some sort of feature even if it is not that clear / fish don,t just come straight in and out on the same line / they will follow the flow which will deposit the loose food into some form of holding spot ? you would do better spending time finding this .

and yes before i get slated some situations require long distant casting to reach fish but you still need to know where that is ? the seabed is not paved with fish or sites like this would be full of successful fishing sessions / time and understanding equal better fishing
Thanks (I think!) for your input.....

What's wrong with peope wanting to cast further ? I did actually state in my original post, casting further when needed !
I do try and research venues before going, but some species at some venues are further out than others !

I am looking for a longer rod to try and help me get some distance with my casts (when it's needed !)ne I find I'm restricting where I fish to places that don't ed big casts but it is limiting me from places I want to fish !! I have no idea how to pendulum cast so I thought I would start by looking at a 14' or 15' rod.

Knowing that Yuki's are supposed to be quite good ;) , I have seen this one for sale and wondered if anyone had any thoughts / reviews on it as I cannot find too much info on it. My budget is around the £150 - £199 maximum.

this is the problem on fishing sites people take things the wrong way / nothing wrong with wanting to cast further but you also state you are restricting yourself to fish places that don,t need big casts .

all i am saying is you don,t need to spend money on rods with large casting ability if you are not fishing in the right place all large fish can be caught close in if you find the right spots especially under the cover of darkness / never mind good luck on getting your rod .

I understand where you are coming from whistieling sands and agree on some points. Knowledge of a venue and target species are of prime importance. As is casting ability , not just distance but also accuracy an the ability to cast whatever tackle is needed for that particular day. I've used up to 12oz on occasion in strong tides and bad swells . Some people could not understand how to start casting with that kind of weight. However having the ability to cast a lead a long way will, if used right, put more fish on the beach. Il give you a few real life examples. At the summer league match at Caldy earlier on in the year. I cast short all match. My first cast wasn't even that , it was a drop off the rod tip as the tide pushed back, when I was 20 yards back I had a bite , left it 5 minuets and reeled in a treble of flounder, did the same second cast and got a double . I didn't cast more than 60 yards all day because flounders were the target and I know they would be close in. Last weekend colwyn bay Victoria SAC had their annual open at Llandudno , it was won with a weight of 30.0.0, 21 dogfish by Karl Nangle. He can cast 3 sandeels an incredible distance and he reached those dogs by doing that. If he couldn't cast far he would have only caught undersized whiting. So an ability to cast far and a knowledge of when to use it is imperative.
Out of interest , have you ever had any casts measured Whisteling sands or zippie01

Interesting one this.. What rods are you using at the moment Andy?
Defo worth trying a few different conti style rods if you can before splashing the cash. A few of the lads I fish with have tried them but ended up back using their usual 13-14ft rods in the end. Their main gripe was they folded to easily with 6-7oz + bait. I'm sure there are stiffer versions which would suit these weights but I've not tried one.
Best of luck in your search for your new rod.

You might find the pic of Ben Harrison,ex under 21 world champion on here using search.Using the same rod as Andy is looking at I have seen a video of him casting a 10oz weight on the Breakie and seen the pic of the 35lb Tope he caught of the Lleyn using the same rod with a 6oz Gemini and a full macky. It cost £135.My Yuki Q7 is rated upto 200gms and used along side my Colmic F1 Zero 7 my fishing has taken on a new dimension. Some models cost a few bob but not much more than a decent Zippie and sometimes less.

sorry lads this is why i don.t bother getting involved with fishing sites that much / the subjects starts acting like trees and branching out in all directions.

andy posted asking about buying a continental style rod on a set budget to try and improve his catch rate.

my reply as i only pleasure fish was to make a point that good catches can be made by doing other things / there is a lot more to fishing than just hurling a lead out.

But thats what forums are for Brian...to explore every avenue to ensure that the correct decisions are eventually made.Long may the sometimes convoluted discussions on WSF continue. That is the reason why WSF with over 2000 members is one of the most popular and first read sites on the wibbly wobbley web.

Being able to cast further is another part of your armoury...it`s not the be all n end all,but will put you on fish that others can`t reach...the Colwyn match is a perfect example,as it`s more of a casting competition. Beach craft, baits n rigs are all important but sometimes they are nothing unless you can cast a fair way. I got a 15ft TFG Force 8 18 months ago and find it`s brilliant for casting with an overhead style, which is just as well as after doing my shoulder ligaments,i can`t swing the lead at all.

Yeah , sorry we have a case of mission creep, zzippie01 don't know that particular yuki rod but you may find a longer rod casts further, however that is not guaranteed. At the moment I've got 7 long rods 15/16ft , from grauvell, vercelli, fox , quantum, and greys, however my best measured cast , ( 207 yards, Cockerham, August 2010, north west surfcasting association) was with a standard 13.4 rod with 0.31 mono.. Food for thought, good luck with your quest

I already have a 12' AFAW six & bait which I love, so I have gone for the 14' mkII fixed spool AFAW. I have matched it up with a Penn Affinity 8000 (many thanks Mr Duffy !). I want to learn more about braid before I go down that route ;)

If you haven't used the reel take it back and swap for the 7000.
