The support sleeves sold on ebay probably do support the handle and take away any wobbly cranking feeling. But I don't think this is necessary and probably caused the failure on Brian's reel:
The cause of the wobble is from the gap (GREEN ARROW) between the brass handle shaft and the stainless gear shaft (which broke). However I think the Daiwa engineers put this clearance there to prevent putting any side loading on the gear shaft. It's not designed to support the handle in that way. What is , is the bearing which sits on the handle shaft in the side plate (RED ARROW).
Although this supports the handle shaft it does need to have a clearance and the handle shaft does wobble against the bearing. However rather than this wobble be taken up by the gear shaft and risk putting too much side force into it towards the bottom of the shaft (GREEN ARROW) the Daiwa engineers chose to make the gap between the handle shaft and the gear shaft large enough so that the handle shaft could wobble without touching the top of the gear shaft.
knocked up a simplified cross section diagram:
Black = set plate and gear shaft
Yellow = brass handle shaft
Blue = bearing
Red = support sleeve
Bottom: - When not cranking the handle.
Middle: Without support sleeve - handle shaft wobbles but doesn't contact the top of the gear shaft so doesn't bend it.
Top diagram: With support sleeve - handle shaft still wobbles against bearing but also wobbles the gear shaft.
