yes ive had the same problem sent it to scotland 08450603603 they only glued it back free of charge
new side plate was £54 ish, ive had a couple of outings with it it is still ok,
the cause was puting under to mutch presure when reeling the weed in
you cant beat the SL20 side plates all one peace tight lines

Seriously Though...It could be a floor in the spindle, which has given way under time or You have put too much lateral pessure on the handle when winding in. This happens when you have a heavy weight e.g. big fish or weed and you force the handle round instead of pumping the rod up and winding down.
I would send it back to Daiwa, you never know, they might just replaice the reel.
You can buy a pinion support pin/sleeve off ebay. That strenghthens this part of the reel, they simply slot over the main drive pinion. For a fiver you can't go wrong.

It had a pin/sleeve on it not sure if that made it snap,,,as the handle wobbles when reeling a big fish in it makes the pin wobble as well without the sleeve it might not wobble as much. Just don't know

Didn't realise where the shaft had broken when I first saw the pic. I think that the "Strengthening sleeve" may have caused the failure rather than help to prevent it. Have you still got it Brian? I'm thinking that the Diawa engineers are not as daft as everyone thinks and have left this gap between the two drive shafts for this reason.

Will post pics up when I get a minute to show what I mean.

The support sleeves sold on ebay probably do support the handle and take away any wobbly cranking feeling. But I don't think this is necessary and probably caused the failure on Brian's reel:




The cause of the wobble is from the gap (GREEN ARROW) between the brass handle shaft and the stainless gear shaft (which broke). However I think the Daiwa engineers put this clearance there to prevent putting any side loading on the gear shaft. It's not designed to support the handle in that way. What is , is the bearing which sits on the handle shaft in the side plate (RED ARROW).




Although this supports the handle shaft it does need to have a clearance and the handle shaft does wobble against the bearing. However rather than this wobble be taken up by the gear shaft and risk putting too much side force into it towards the bottom of the shaft (GREEN ARROW) the Daiwa engineers chose to make the gap between the handle shaft and the gear shaft large enough so that the handle shaft could wobble without touching the top of the gear shaft.

I do agree with you Jon,I thought the same thing when it snapped, so have left it out of the reel they repaired.
