Round 1 Result and Report

A competitive yet informal set of matches in and around the Mersey. With only 2 fish to count,it`s a good way to get in to match angling.

Longest Fish Pool..............Rob Turner -Thornback Ray 49cm (£25)

So this years WSF Winter League got underway at what is now the seemingly fish sure venue of Perch Rock. It was an early start however that did not detract from the numbers with a superb turnout of 25 anglers looking to get some points on the board. Everyone was raring to go on what was a very calm and mild morning...........................

Image

Once out on the beach everyone fanned out and got ready to go with anglers spread right along the stretch. All in was called at 07:15 and we were underway. It was fish from the off with Whiting and Dogs making an instant appearance on the bank. A few people went all out for dabs early on however I hedged my bets with small fish baits and second cast I was rewarded with a nice Ray. I say nice because we will never know how big it was as after unhooking it I went to wash it off before measuring it only to see it slip out of my hand and back into the water. Despite Dave Roberts best river-dance impression trying to trap it, it was gone. What a plank.

Plenty of people now had fish on the board with Dog's and Whiting as well as a couple of people finding early Dabs' the sun rose from across the river.................

Image

Then 90 minutes before low the Rays came on the feed. Jeff White, Ste Atkinson, Wayne Kirby, Dave Phillipson, Neil Price and Kev Brindle all took Thornback's. Ste Atkinson with the typical size of Ray being taken........................

Image

Neil Price actually took a total of four however only one was above the magic 40cm to beat the Dogfish brigade. Rob Turner then found himself attached to a better fish....................

Image

Which resulted in the best fish of the match at 49cm which would be enough for him to take the longest fish pool and put him in pole position going into the last hour.....................

Image

Dylan Kensall couldn't find a Ray however he managed the best Dab of the match at 31cm to go with his Dogfish and Jeff White also found a Dab to go with his Ray. In total 18 of the 25 anglers managed to get the combo on their card. I thankfully got my chance at Ray redemption when I landed this 44cm fish which obviously I immediately measured this time around.......................

Image

It was however to be Rob Turner who would take a 26cm Dab to go with his 49cm Ray to give him the match win on the opening day of this years Winter League. We now head for the first of two trips to Otterspool in Round 2.

A good start to the series with plenty of fish coming out.The rays at my end of the beach were not much bigger than dabs with my best going 28cm across the wings.Sadly no dabs but plenty of dogs and whiting to christen the new rod.A good report as usual Adam.

Excellent report Adam and well done to Rob for a super Thorny/Dab combo

And Dyl's 31cm Dab also

The Thornies certainly kept them interest going - having got the early dog, it was a case of going for a bigger Ray or a bigger Dab

Like you say, a venue that always seems to provide the fish and look forward to Otterspool in round 2

Great report and match, been a while since I've fished one and it was good to catch up with the lads I knew and meet a few I didn't. I have to say I don't miss the old way of having a big bucket of dead fish at the weigh in, good to see most go back healthy this way 8)

Thanks for running the match Adam , great report too. Plenty of fish and good to see everyone. Couldn’t find a Ray and only managed a dab in my second to last cast. Enjoyed it despite the hangover!
