Optimum River Levels

Is there an optimum level to get best results I remember our kid used to ring a number to get the levels on the Severn,as certain heights were better than others.....are rising rivers better than falling rivers

Always prefered falling rivers myself.All the carp that has gone into them is on its way out.The fish will usually start to feed properly once all the carp has gone.

for the ribble you need a bit of water flowing through the bugger if your going to target the barbs...how much is too much is the difficult question

alway prefer a river that is dropping myself..less weed and carp flowing down it...but i have had days that are spot on when it is at normal summer levals..every one to themselves....

I would say a dropping river, Kev. They usually fish best when "Finning off"

Dropping is usualy they way but all rivers and stretches are different, keep a log book of what you catch, weather, water clarity and height etc Most rivers have a webcam now so you can see the river before you go, ill do a quick gooooooogle search



Can anyone pm me some spots on the ribble where big barb hang out please... prefeably where night fishing is permitted Im not to be tarred with the litter leaving tit brush or the standard 15kilos of unessacary bait carp fisherman brush either... i respect the water the fish live in so top specs are safe

You`ll need a St Helens card for the Elston stretch...£20 per year,and you also get other stretches of the Wyre and Severn at Shrewsbury

Eccleston Angling just down from Saints ground does them too.....night fishing is allowed on the Ribble stretches....barbel city if you like that kinda thing....prefer chub meeeself

8.5lb is my best....fished with the Mersey Dockers on field 5 at Atcham,Shrewsbury,about 15 years ago......hit 23 barbel but only got 11 in did`nt know what i was doing then.......
