Perch Rock - Sunday 10th

Postby prawnster » Mon Jan 11, 2010 4:28 pm

With the cancellation of the Fish & Meet, the Three Legged Cat and I were at a loose end as to where to go for our regular Sunday outing this weekend :? Richie and Middo were fishing the RAFA match at Perch Rock so we thought we'd tag along - more for the craic than any expectations of a fish-fest :D

When we got there it wasn't too unpleasant, the gentle north-easterly had a chill to it but nothing that stuffing your hands in your pockets wouldn't deal with. Both set up with 2 hook flappers and our bait selection was a packet of fresh black, a bit of frozen, some mackerel, squid, sandeels and frozen crab... we didn't bother wasting the crab or sandeels and just concentrated on the worm, mack and squid in various combinations. I was first in with this sabre-toothed leviathan...

A rather impressive Dab which tipped the scales at a mighty 5oz 8)

Middo managed to snare a decent whiting (sorry no pic), then I found another 5oz Dab, then Richie had one - 5oz, then I had another 5oz then another 5oz - I must have set myself up over a Dab nest :D :D :D

Meanwhile, quietly fishing away, the Cat hauled in these 2 escapees from the nest

Then Richie posed for a rare photo... must get him to sign it for me 8) :D :D

It was dab city...

Then one brave little codling took a liking to the Cat's mackerel strip

Not sure how the match was getting on, but as we got nearer to low water, there seemed to be quite a few fish (mostly dabs) coming ashore.

Low water came, the tide turned, the wind picked up and the temperature plummeted, it was freeeezing  , not the place to be handling frozen squid and worms :(

We finished with around half a dozen fish each, a good laugh and pleasant company as usual. The Cat and I packed up and left pretty sharpish when their match finished so I'm not sure how the lads got on at the weigh-in.

Curiously, there were a few charter boats which sat just off Perch Rock all day... almost within casting distance :? , that's first time I ve seen them that close in and even in that area myself. I wonder if they did any better than dabs :?

Tight lines
Prawn & Cat :D

ps just noticed my eyes in the pictures... must have been the cold wind  nothing at all to do with one too many celebratary ones in the pub the night before
