Smoothy-fest...? you decide

Postby prawnster » Tue Jun 16, 2009 9:57 am

As I mentioned in yesterdays "Fishing Sessions" post, after a bad day at work, the options were a) go to the pub, or b) fish the bank... no brainer at the moment - pub it was! ...Only joking :D

Three Legged Cat and I headed off to New Brighton for the 8.30pm walk/wade... the Cat's getting a little braver now (with some gentle persuasion) and we managed to get through the gutter - the Cat on tip-toes - pretty early in the ebb of the tide and marched back toward Sunday's groundbaited mark

Didn't quite get all the way this time as the smaller tide meant that we could only get so far along before we literally ran out of sand

Conditions were perfect, the sun was dropping and there was a nice little breeze which chopped up the water nicely
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P6150078.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P6150078.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Usual sketch, a mixture of peelers and softback crabs, 2 hook pulley pennels and then chuck it as far as you can. First cast, wham... this little chap came ashore, coughing up a hermit crab as I unhooked him.
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P6150077.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P6150077.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Like the shirt :D :D :D

Much to our delight, it actually did turn into the smoothy-fest that we'd hoped for (albeit, landing nothing bigger than 2 or 3 lbs), it was bite after bite, the Cat lost her first hooked fish - which was going well (another knot lesson reqired :D ), then I lost one, then more bites... the stuff that dreams are made of (almost!)

The Cat got a nice one...
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P6150079.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P6150079.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I got another one...
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P6150081.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P6150081.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The Cat got another...
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P6150082.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P6150082.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And then me with one more...
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P6150084.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P6150084.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I think you get the picture, in between the fish that we landed there was a small showing of whiting and dabs (not as many as usual though)... and plenty of GOOD bites, the majority of which I'm pretty sure were hounds.

We finished up with 5 starry hounds on the bank, 3 or 4 lost on the way in 1 snapped off, a few whiting and a couple of dabs, countless decent bites.

Finished fishing about 12.15am which was about an hour after low... A WORD OF WARNING - we left it a bit late and ended up wading back, knee deep, through the gutter in the dark... quite a nervy experience :? .
Don't be tempted, once the tide turns it really is time to think about getting back off the bank ;)

Joking apart... it's a long way :? , you will see a red buoy on your right as you're walking out, at the moment, with these smallish tides you can only get a couple of hundred yards beyond it before you run out of sand... if you waited another quarter of an hour, you could go further but you'll know when you reach that point.

Don't forget to take a lamp ;) and if you are going alone - PLEASE take heed of the tide times, pack up and get off as soon as you hit low water - 12.30am tonight.

It's easy to lose your bearings on the way back in the dark, I suggest that you walk back favouring the right hand side of the bank following the gutter back to the T groin ;)

Good luck

I can see them in the main post if I am not logged on. When I log on then it's like Al says, the pictures only show up in Add Reply.
