Hangovers and spots before your eyes...

Postby prawnster » Mon May 11, 2009 12:01 am

Me and the Cat intended to fish over high at New Brighton, get some grub and then do The Bank but I had to go into work this morning and The Cat was nursing a category 5 hangover so that put paid to that plan.

The Bank it was then, arrived at the raised walkway at just the right time today, by the time we'd dressed appropriately and got the gear ready, the other lads on parade were making their way down to the waters edge, ready for the march... nice to meet Bri off the site.
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P5100040.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P5100040.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Now for those of you who haven't taken it on yet, height plays quite an important roll in dictating when you "go for it"... the guys you can see already on the bank are 6 footers... The Cat isn't

After one false start we went for it... jelly fish city by the way
After and steady wade, we were through the gutter and on our way out to the red buoy
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P5100041.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P5100041.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Usual rigs for us, pulley pennel at distance and a 2 hook flapper not so far out... I took a 16 footer out for a test run today (thanks Richie), wow  , could I cast that puppy.

We were armed, bait wise with peeler, fresh lug, squid and sandeel edit should have been armed with if The (hungover) Cat hadn't left the squid and sandeel in the freezer

As we were setting up, Bri shouted across and pointed at a seal bobbing in the waves about 150 yards straight out in front of us... great, just what you want to see when you arrive at a mark  , anyway, having never cast the 16 footer before, I wound it up with no bait on and , purely by fluke, almost knocked the seal out  ... needless to say, that was the last we saw of him today.

On with the fishing, guess what, once again The Cat was in first, following on from yesterdays micro plaice, she managed to get a proper 'un today, 15oz :D
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P5100042.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P5100042.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Now there is no suggestion that I'm the competitive sort...
but I was still waiting for my first plaice of the year
and SHE had had 2, it was starting to niggle me
...(well just a little :D )

10 minutes later, knock, knock, knock, my lug bait got snaffled and yours truly gets his first spotty of the year :D :D :D :D 1lb 6oz, rather chuffed to say the least...
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P5100044.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P5100044.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

As the tide dropped it was pretty quiet on the bite front, we'd only heard of one little whiting being caught further along and nobody else had had anything, I caught Bri praying for some divine intervention
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P5100046.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P5100046.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

As well as all the jellyfish about today, there was plenty of bird activity, terns diving just a few yards off the beach, must have been taking these chaps...
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P5100045.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P5100045.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Whitebait (baby herring) I guess, the scales came off very easily when I put it on my hook :D

As we got down to low water, bang on cue, the dabs arrived along with 8" - 10" whiting, plenty of fish to keep us entertained.

Lost count in the end but I think it was a draw today :D

The tide turned, we gave it another half hour and then got off before we were cut off, when we got back to the car, the sunset was something else... seem to be getting a few sunset pics in my collection :?
<a href="http://s496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/?action=view&current=P5100047.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i496.photobucket.com/albums/rr324/thecod-father/P5100047.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

p.s. I heard that a couple of small boats out today did pretty well, our target species are in the area now, wont be long before they come a wee bit closer into casting range :D

Great report.
Make a difference - take home 1 piece of someone's angling litter next time you are out fishing.

I admit, I am ever so slightly rubbish when I have a hangover.............I shouldn't be allowed to drink  Still at least there's enough bait for the next time.

I think the Prawn might have forgotten to mention he had a muzzy head when he woke up too and as a result didn't manage to take his rods so that we could execute Plan A (fishing over high blah blah blah) :D

My plan (although I shouldn't tell him) is to get in first every time and catch all of the species that he requires for the species hunt. :p Me competitive? Not at all   It's just lucky I don't play golf  ;)
