Rock Channel - Take Two

Postby iank » Thu May 11, 2017 8:32 pm

My first trip out to the Rock Channel on the banks was on Monday with Richie. We were quite confident of catching after the boats had caught steadily over the last week but this was knocked a bit as we crossed the gulley and found the water to be quite thick with algae. Not to be deterred we did the usual yomp and set up.......

Bites proved pretty scarce and the only fish of the day was a tea bag thorny....

TRIP 2

When I was asked by Steve (he'd also heard how the boats got on) if I fancied the long walk I felt a bit pessimistic but a decent forecast made me join him and Roy. On crossing the gulley it was immediately noticeable that the water was clearer, there was a nice south west breeze and optimism grew.

We got set up as quickly as possible and that first chuck proved to be important. Roy was first in......

Image

But as he was sorting this out I had a lovely slack liner and had a great tussle with my first shore caught smoothound of the year......

Image

The scales were unfortunately set in kilos after my last trip abroad but eventually held at 5.48kg My computer tells me that this is 12.08lb a really pleasing start to the summer season for me.

Roy was on top form and was quickly into more fish......

Image

He managed a good species mix with another bass, whiting and dabs before he landed the days target.......

All in all a couple of enjoyable walks with good company and a few fish.

Excellent session. Cracking smut Ian, if there's a few more of that stamp knocking about it'll be a good season.

Good to see a few bass showing too. It puzzles me why more aren't caught out there.

Richie,

I forgot all about you picking up the car and was expecting you to take up Steves invite, and to see you down there. The water was totally different to the other day so it's got to be worth another go soon.

Hope the car is all that you expected, looking forward to a posh ride up to the Llyn :)

Like Graham I'm at a bit of a loss how Roy can get two bass while I've never seen another one landed along there when I've fished it. Maybe we are too focused on one thing?
