Final round of N.W.A.S.A.C. Summer League, Sun 2.9.12

Match Report: Final round of N.W.A.S.A.C. Summer League, Sun 2.9.12, Bromborough, Wirral (41 rods).

With only only three of the forty- four permanent pegs not drawn, this was a fittingly well attended finale to what has been a close fought Summer League this year.
Stuart Dewhurst, fishing the very much unfancied Peg 2, defied the odds to win the match with a catch of flounders, whiting and eels.
The old friendly rivalry between two anglers from opposite sides of the Mersey was settled for this year; Joe Perry won the league by one point over Bill Lindfield.
Although Steve Crowder’s 78 cms thornback (to black lug on a size 4 hook!) won the roundfish pool, the most significant catch was by John S. Williams, a sizeable smelt (Osmerus Eperianus). This protected migratory species has done well to survive in an estuary with such a history of pollution as the Mersey.
The highest scorers of the 76 anglers who fished the series will be invited to fish in the Top 30 Final early in 2013.

1. Stuart Dewhurst (Preston), 354 cms (photo).
