I use a wide variety of different tackle and while the long rod , fixed spool , braid combination can give great distance they can and do have drawbacks. I have been using long rods for over 12 years now and have used many different models . I would suggest you save more money and buy towards the top end yuki rods if you are looking at using it regular on the Mersey. As a suggestion why not try a fixed spool loaded with braid with your current rods? A instant way of increasing distance is to decrease line diameter. On some of my long rods , I use 20 lb whiplash which is 0.06mm diameter, to this I attach a 65lb or 80 lb whiplash braid leader. Having tried tapered leaders and suffering from countless snap offs I switched to braid leaders and haven't snapped off once since. With a simple overhead thump it flies , with a swing its out of sight!. You can use Braid with a multiplier for casting but it involves an advanced retrieve system that is hard work to perfect
Ps were you going fishing today , going through the wallaby tunnel about 10am?
I wish I was going fishing yesterday Steve, but no I was in work !!
