Yuki Competition Kiiro Surf Fishing Rod
Yuki Competition Kiiro Surf Fishing Rod
Hi,
I am looking for a longer rod to try and help me get some distance with my casts (when it's needed !) I find I'm restricting where I fish to places that don't need big casts but it is limiting me from places I want to fish !! I have no idea how to pendulum cast so I thought I would start by looking at a 14' or 15' rod.
Knowing that Yuki's are supposed to be quite good , I have seen this one for sale and wondered if anyone had any thoughts / reviews on it as I cannot find too much info on it. My budget is around the £150 - £199 maximum.

Andy they are great rods.Ben Harrison used one to hurl out a 6oz lead and a macky bait to land a 35lb Tope on a Llynn rock mark.I love my Yuki Q7.Match it with a Penn Surfblaster/Affinity and 80lb e-bay braid straight through and you'll reach distances that where in your dreams.

Got to agree with Steve. I also got the Q7 as well as a Shakespeare k2, both 15'. They are very different rods but I enjoy using them both and they have improved my distance.
When I was looking around I also couldn't find much on the net so I phoned moonfleet angling in the north east a few times as they sell the yukis. I didn't get one from there in the end as i bought a good second hand one but they were really helpful every time. They could be worth a Google and call.

Cheers steve, I have looked at the Yuki Q7 but £310 is a bit beyond me at the moment and I cannot find any 2nd hand !
This Yuki one is only £129 which seems a bargain !!

It will definitely allow you to hit greater distances Andy. As you know I have a Yuki Q6, not quite as powerful as the Q7 that both Steve and Ian have, but loaded with 30lb braid and an over head thump I'm hitting similar distances as when I'm pendulum casting my Zzippies. I also tried it with 80lb braid as Steve mentioned but distances were much reduced though I was still able to send the lead out a fair distance. I doubt I'll be using it in the Mersey over the winter though as the tidal pull will be a bit much for the tip, but I'll be using it far more for beach fishing from now on.

Re: Yuki Competition Kiiro Surf Fishing Rod
A bit of food for thought there Graham. I've loaded one of my spools with 40lb so I might drop down to that for a while, I've also tried it with 20lb which I used with a leader but Ive found i like using braid straight through as it certainly cuts out that bunch of weed on the knot that is a feature of fishing the Mersey.
Out of the two long rods I've got I actually prefer the k2 for fishing the river, it was much cheaper but I find it just the job for the Mersey, if I could get another for the same price (£100) I'd jump at the chance. For me while I think the Q7 would be fine for the river I tend to use it mostly for beach fishing.

Yeah no problem, but while you can get braid on e-bay for 5p a mile no mono will be going near mine.

It is ok on boat multi's.On the beach it sometimes beds in and that can lead to a birdie which will be impossible to unpick so you end up cutting a load off.Stick to a fixed spool and life will be sweet.

Re: Yuki Competition Kiiro Surf Fishing Rod
I had a bit of a nightmare last week trying to use one of the boat rods with a multi and braid casting uptide so wouldn't really like to try it from the beach, no matter what settings I tried it seemed to overrun mid cast or hold back too much. As Steve said there always seems to be a stage where the braid digs in. Once I changed to a fixed spool, no problems but that could just be me.
Mono is fine with either set up but I would suggest you give braid a try some time. I'm certainly converted.

Re: Yuki Competition Kiiro Surf Fishing Rod
Hello, zippie , can't help you with the yuki rods but I do know they , in general, are highly thought of. I use a wide variety of different tackle and while the long rod , fixed spool , braid combination can give great distance they can and do have drawbacks. I have been using long rods for over 12 years now and have used many different models . I would suggest you save more money and buy towards the top end yuki rods if you are looking at using it regular on the Mersey. As a suggestion why not try a fixed spool loaded with braid with your current rods? A instant way of increasing distance is to decrease line diameter. On some of my long rods , I use 20 lb whiplash which is 0.06mm diameter, to this I attach a 65lb or 80 lb whiplash braid leader. Having tried tapered leaders and suffering from countless snap offs I switched to braid leaders and haven't snapped off once since. With a simple overhead thump it flies , with a swing its out of sight!. You can use Braid with a multiplier for casting but it involves an advanced retrieve system that is hard work to perfect
Ps were you going fishing today , going through the wallaby tunnel about 10am?

Re: Yuki Competition Kiiro Surf Fishing Rod
same old same old here in my honest opinion and fishing experience people wanting to expand their fishing skills and catch rates get drawn down this road of distant casting thinking they will catch more wrong ?
i think the best way to catch more fish is to put more time into understanding the area you intend to fish tides features etc i have mentioned this before / been fishing more times than i can mention and anglers come over and say it hasn't fished well tonight ---- they just turn up on a beach or rock mark and get the rods out rig up and launch the whole thing as far as they can without even knowing what is out there or what fish they are targeting .
and as for your rod and terminal tackle you can,t just use the same thing for every situation it will depend on the fish you target and geography of the beach
every venue has its own demands and problems to solve to get the best out of them .
every beach has some sort of feature even if it is not that clear / fish don,t just come straight in and out on the same line / they will follow the flow which will deposit the loose food into some form of holding spot ? you would do better spending time finding this .
and yes before i get slated some situations require long distant casting to reach fish but you still need to know where that is ? the seabed is not paved with fish or sites like this would be full of successful fishing sessions / time and understanding equal better fishing

forgot to mention what are the places you missing out on due to not having the casting capability ?
