This topic was discussued a few weeks ago, when Big Kev gave the instructions on how to make pump seals by using dog balls. I followed the written guide and found it successful. I did promise to follow up with a photo guide so here it is, no dogs were harmed in the making of ths series.
Dog balls costing £1 from Pets at Home Aintree - just slice the end of
Use the end of the pump to cut out a core - this can be a bit tough if the end of the pump is standard issue - i have the rim ground down a bit.
I mark the centre of the bung - i think it helps if the pull rod is more central. I am not sure what others do but I don't use the full length of the bung, i use approximately 2/3 of the length. I suppose it depends on the amount of threads on the pull rod and how hard you want to pull - just experiment.
I am still not an expert at pumping especially in the winter, but at least I know the pump is set up correctly and hoping that the success rates increases again with the warmer days

Hi Kev
I must have followed your instructions correctly then - do you use the full bung or cut it down. How long do they last, I am not sure how durable they are but they really create some suction.

Re: Dog Balls Again
I cut it down a bit and usually get a good year out of one bung...not sure how long they would last,as i usually put a new one in each year just to be on the safe side...£1 a year is not too bad

Re: Dog Balls Again
I should have added a final photo to show how much of the "core" to cut off, cutting in half is usually too thin so approximately 2/3 seems to be right.

The photos are spot on. Thanks
Funny enough I've just come in from the garage where I made two this morning before seeing your post. I should be ok for a couple of years now. The other thing I did, maybe unnecessarily, was to cut a small chamfer on the leading edge with scissors.

Re: Dog Balls Again
I need to do this with my slim alvey pump which i should be using but its in the garage collecting dust!
So i buy the ball and....
1. Cut the top section
2. Push my pump through it
3. then cut it so both ends are flat
4. put a hole though it using somthing long/thin
5.re attach it to my pump
With the washer i dont need to glue it or anything do i i just re attached the washer and bolt as its fitted now? Sorry for being confusing but i get confused very easy lol

No glue needed, just put it back together with your new sponge washer.......the other thing i put in is washers made from old wellies...metal washer, then 2 wellie washers, then your sponge bung, then another wellie washer and finally the second metal washer

Re: Dog Balls Again
Excuse me for being thick but are the original bungs in the pump really that bad that they affect the amount of worms you can get? I still have the original in mime and theres still plenty of suction. Am I missing something?
