Talacre

Postby Patriot » Sun May 26, 2019 3:34 pm

Due to the road closures for the Liverpool Marathon and the fact that i blanked at Vale Park on Friday night....

Plus reading all of these reports from Talacre....everyone else seems to be fishing there so no brainer!

Fished there instead

First one down and as I was unloading the car, a few others turned up also

Took the (very) long walk and after 20-25 minutes, i arrived at my chosen spot

Just fresh crab for bait and fished two rods. Bit of a comp between the rods!

First cast: Smoothie

This continued for a while and it was a fish a cast. I could barely bait up quick enough. some pics a bit blurred due to continous heavy rain

All of the fish i would say were arounf 4-6lb with one of the Tope a bit bigger

In amongst the smoothies, were three Tope also. I recall getting small ones last year and someone on the site said the tope have the black tips on their tails

And Dabs. On 3/0 and 4/0 hooks! No pics

The lad up the beach from me then landed a stonker of a bass..we guessed it was around 6lb. I should have have taken a pic. Certainly the bigeest Bass i've seen

His Dad is a mate of Paul Tuckers (Mike). He mentioned Paul had a couple of rays at Vale?

As we reached turn of the tide, the wind really picked up and everything was getting sanded up.

I stopped taking pics because of the heavy rain, but final tally was 11 Smoothounds, 3 Tope, 3 Dab and a Bass. Brilliant!

At the end, finished with a bonus bass, just a small one, but very enjoyable. Except the walk back into that breeze. Hard work!

Overall, a memorable day. I'm off this week and will return on Tuesday and perhaps Thursday

Over the bridge and through the gate at the end of the road

I do recall last year on a very big tide that the gate was locked though. Parking possible, but some of the car parks lock their gates also at 7pm

Looks like a great session. Well done guys

Just one thing though. How are you identifying the Tope? All the pics look like Smoothies to me based on the large rear dorsal fins.

The absence of the distinguishable stars, plus the black tip on the top of the tail

I recall posting about this in June last year, i think it was Paul Tucker who mentioned the top having the black tip on the top of the tail

For sure though, no sign of any stars

More than happy to be corrected if i am wrong :D

Tope don’t have stars, that’s for sure but neither do half of all smoothies. No idea where the “black tip” idea comes from. None of the Tope I’ve ever caught had them.

The distinguishing features for me are

A. Tope have teeth. Smoothies don’t
B. The second dorsal fin on Tope is very small. It’s quite large on a smoothie.

Hope this helps on the ID front. Still a cracking session :)
