Out and About On the Lleyn

Postby wobbler72 » Sun Jul 22, 2018 8:18 pm

Sorry I've not been posting much lately. Finding time to post has been difficult. However, I've still managed to get out here and there for a bit of sport.

Two weeks back I went walkabout with the lure rod to some broken ground not far from my holiday base in Pwllheli. I've been meaning to give it a go for some time. Glad I did. I had 5 Schoolies in 6 casts, before they moved on a little. Nothing big, best was probably only a 1lb, but good fun all the same.

A few days later, I got out for the day on the boat with Lofty. I slightly misjudged the conditions and wasted a journey to our intended mark, but the back-up continued to produce Huss after Huss, all in the 8-12lb range. Matt managed to break the monotony with a camera shy Thornie of around 4lb.

Today, I got a surprise opportunity to get out again on the boat with my son Mark. and it was another good day. We set off early and headed 20 miles down the coast. I tied a few rigs using Megabass Xlayer Tiny lures in a variety of colours and dropped them down, hoping for some summer Codling. And it didn't take long. Mark was in almost immediately with his first ever Codling at around 1.5lb, paired with a Wrasse of similar weight. My first drop also found the target, this time around 1lb.

As we drifted around we found a few more Codling, the best being 2lb. Mark also caught what seems to be his specialist species, a male Cuckoo Wrasse

He went on to catch another male and two females, interspersed with plenty of Ballans in the 2-4lb range.

By now, we were also starting to get smashed by Pollack. I put on a Fiiish Balck Minnow and the stamp of fish started to improve. 2lb, then 3lb and then Mark hit something a bit better:

At dead on 5lb, it's his best to date.

We had a few more in the 4lb range before we eventually called it a day and started to head back closer to home in search of Bream and Tope.

Mark put out the bream rods while I set up the Tope rods. He was into the first Bream of the day before I even got a line in the water:

When I did get a line in, I too didn't have to wait long. This little beauty of (guessing) 40lb gave a really good account of itself on 12-20lb class gear.

We both had more Tope and  handful of Bream before the doggies moved in.

With the Mackerel now well and truly in, the fishing is definitely on the up. I've a long weekend on the Lleyn next week. Can't wait :)

Well in Kev. It was our maiden voyage on Sunday. Only went out into the bay and dropped feathers down as I was with my lad but we soon had a bucket full of Mack to replenish my bait freezer. Hopefully see you out there at some point

I’ve bought a little SeaHog SeaTrooper and have it on Pwllheli mariner so looking forward to getting out on it throughout the summer months

Great stuff that sounds like your going to have a lot of fun and the seahog looks an ideal choice.

We were out again yesterday too. Full family trip so mainly cruising and sight seeing. PBL2 course this weekend...going to be fun with the winds that have been forecast!
