Otterspool 9th Jan

Postby Patriot » Tue Jan 09, 2018 6:28 pm

Made the trip down to a very grey and overcast Otterspool today. South-Easterly kept it cool, but fishable

Fished noon-5pm, high water was just before 5pm

Tide was better so armed with Fresh black lug, Frozen crab and squid

Basically a waste of time :D :D

On small codlet, 26cm, in 5 hours

It appears the cod have deserted us.

And i could'nt even tempt them with this

But better than nothing. I could say it was so big, but 26cm is all it was

Your opinions boys....fishing for cod would you have a long bait like Jeff`s Image or do you prefer to have a shorter/thicker bait, possibly bound together with bait elastic :?:

Half the length three times the width, the Whiting and Codlets just bite chunks out of long baits.

Yep, looks nice but I prefer a more compact bait

Yeah, kept chopping and changing between short and long baits. Just trying different combinations

The double crab on its own on the last cast was nicely bound together - but still no fish

Kev, for me it would definately be a shorter bait. Some of the best fish I’ve caught have come to very small baits.
For cod I usually fish just one whole crab or maybe a black or yellowtail tipped with a crab or small squid.
My baits for Cod are normally no longer than 4inch at a guess. :D

I know Jeff has caught some massive fish in his time though, so he gotta be doin something right :D
Them North East lads fish some big fish marks.

Bigger on the boat when in the main flow 2 worms folded over bound into a fat sausage shape. That said have fished some big baits from the shore but often fatter than longer as the tide would only push it back down the snood anyway. But..... anything goes I guess seeing as Godders (I think) had a cod with a hook packet in it last year!
