Anglesey conger bash.

Postby starfish » Sat Jan 06, 2018 1:37 am

Anglesey conger bash. 06/01/18.

Grate conditions today for a trip up to anglesey as the wind had dropped right down for a change
the tides were a tad big for the mark i was going too but i was still going there all the same :D
Big hooks and Big baits and big fish were on the menu tonight and not a dab or whiting insight
i arrived actually quite late as i got stuck in a jam on the way up
and i just had the time to take a long walk and climbed down to my chosen venue just as darkness fell
i only had 2 hours either side of low water for a shot at the conger then the tide run would become unfishable.

Image

The First good knock and good run came within 10 minutes, and it was fish on but it let go half way up
it felt like a real good fish but it had gone, i then baited the area up i was fishing to get them feeding
this had good results with the rod going again with a screaming ratchet and a thumping bite
i picked the rod up and fell back giving the conger time to let it go
it came from the same spot as before so i cast back in again to the same place
and within 15 minutes it was back and this time i had the hook set, it pulled back with some force
then it went solid on me  there was not much i could do
apart from to let some tension off and give it some slack and hope it would come back out
10 minutes later the rod was thumping again and it was back out :D
i struck into it again and then i had one hell of a fight on my hands
but i got the better of it and i got it up too the surface
and my eyes poped out my head jesus this is easalie a PB here :D

now the realisation set in  i am far too high up here that fish is far too big and i am on my own
and i could not move the fish anymore with the rod :?
i moved the rod back and grabbed the line and started moving down towards the conger
i managed to move it up and onto a lower ledge :D
Then i did something real stupid i pulled the line way to hard i was only 10 feet away and the hook popped out :?
i am now looking at a conger over 30lb lying on a ledge with waves washing over it
and you quessed it it got back off that ledge and slipped right back into the dark depths that it came from
i was shaking for about 20 minutes afterwards :help:

After all that comotion i pulled the other rod back in only to find a starfish on it
going to be one of those nights is it

Image

But then the other rod went again this time i had managed to pull a small strap out safely this time. :D

Image

No sooner had that one gone back in
i had another one but much better this time
and i manged to redeem myself.

Image

As i went to weight it with my scales i found out they were dead
so now i did not feel to bad about losing the other one
as not knowing what that was, would have been even worse
but this one was an easy 10lb no problem.

Image

And just as the tide turned back i had another smaller strap.

Image

The tide was now running hard and i finished the night with a very greedy dog fish.

Image

I will give that conger a few weeks to recoup and go back and see if it is still there.
and one hell of a good night that and the first double figure fish out for 2018 with only 6 days gone. :D

Well in Tucker. Some nice fish there. Shame about the big lad but think that’s happened to us all at one time or another. Same thing happened to me a few years ago at Llanbedrig. and believe it or not I lost one over 20lb at the Alex Wall in a match and then next cast I had another one on around 10lb that came off half way up the wall. Either fish would have won me the match.
Still haven’t got over it

I think I’ll go with ya next time

Great session and great write up too

I feel your pain on the lost biggie. I lost the biggest Tope I've hooked to date in similar circumstances (easily a 50lber). Five years on, I still beat myself up over it. On the positive side, it's a valuable lesson learned. I've not made the same mistake since, and I doubt you will either :)
