decided a plugging session was called for with all the clear water and bait fish around so decided on the derby pool gulley as it has produced before but on arrival thought i'd head to the very end of the rock channel instead, an hour later i found water

on finishing the walk I could see some terns and cormorants working were the two tide flows were colliding, ideal predator water and first chuck of the plug into the troubled water gave a large slash which I thought was my lure surfacing but on closer inspection my lure was 10 foot from the splash so second cast obviously had to go there and a few turns of the reel later a strong pluck then nothing then a real weight and more splashing but not a great fight resulted in this



not surprising it didn't fight when you see how it was hooked but a first for me and the first I have ever heard of locally and now something i'll target again now i know they are there
I did fish all the way back through the derby pool gully and got no other knocks or follows but the amount of sand eels was unreal

Great catch, I've never seen a gar caught off a beach round here before. I think my fly gear needs an outing!
I saw baitfish jumping in the river on Sunday while I was mulleting (or blanking to be more accurate).

Nice one - maybe I'll take my fly rod on Sunday morning as well as my 'hound' gear.
