Rock Channel 16th June (as well!)

Postby prawnster » Thu Jun 17, 2010 9:17 am

With report of smoothies coming out of the channel I had to get out there and see if I could snare my first of the year :D

As Psychocabbie's report confirms, it was a perfect evening for a stroll out onto the bank and when I arrived at the Clown Roundabout , I was gobsmacked by the number of eager anglers waiting to take on the walk... I counted 23 :o

Jaygo and Shaun1118 were already in amongst the rocks trying to bolster their crab-stash, Aid had arrived and said hello and as I was getting kitted up, Jon - always got crabs ;) - Spudgun pulled up. We were soon ready for the wade and, like something out of a Vietnam War movie, a steady stream of anglers crossed the gutter with tackle held overhead clear of the swiftly flowing ebb tide.

Myself and Aid were "comfortably in the middle of the pack" as the charge ensued and as we approached the buoy, it became apparent that the 100 yards immediately prior to the buoy was the "hot spot", with so much room out there I was a little surprised that guys chose to fish so close together but each to his own I suppose

We set up about 50 yards past with Jaygo, Shaun, Spud and soon after Mark slotting in as they passed us.

Aid was keen, it was his first forray onto the bank and he was eager to start fishing, hence first into the water. I had hardly got myself sorted when there was some excitement to my right and Aid was into a fish. He played it cautiosly to the beach where I paddled out and tailed this beautiful starry smoothound which tipped the scales at 10lb 15oz...

First trip out, first cast... not a bad result at all 8)

As the evening progressed there were a steady stream of hounds being landed, to us it looked like mostly from the "hot spot" short of the buoy.

I managed to save my blank quite early with another fish for the species hunt in the shape of this perfectly formed 5oz baby plaice 8)Image
... followed not long after by this perfectly formed 10oz baby thornback ray 8) Image

Dabmaster Jaygo, although trying his best to moan a smoothy in could only manage dab after dab, punctuated by the occasional whiting... here's his best

Obligatory sunset shot...

As the tide turned and we all starrted to run out of crab Spud managed one and Shaun got this lovely 7 lber to bust his cherry too

All in all a lovely evening with a dozen or so smoothies coming to the bank... none for me or Jaygo this time... anyone fancy it tonight :?:

Great report there!

I didn't know it was you next but one to me.
Saw your fish from where I was and it looked good from where I was.
Wish I had more bait so I could go again.
They give a great fight ! I understand the excitement surrounding them now !!

Excellent report gents, well in Shaun :)
It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming.
