Merseyside....Alex Wall (High and low water mark)

This 300yd stretch of dock wall( ONLY FISHABLE TO THOSE WITH A VALID POLSAF DOCK PERMIT) offers some excellent sport, with plenty of thornback rays from April til September, along with the odd conger and flounder..dogfish arrive in numbers throughout September....winter fishing sees prolific whiting catches along with plenty of dabs...codling are also taken with the odd bigger fish, but catches are not as good as you`d expect from this deep water mark.
The water is deep here, and as such the tidal run can be very strong...look to fish tides up to 27ft...anything over that and the run/weed can make life very difficult...on neap tides you can fish virtually round the clock, though the first couple of hours of the ebb will still run out strong.
Standard beach gear/rigs will be fine, with most baits working well....distance casting is not required with fish being taken close in
Once over the bridge, the first section you come to is "The Chains"
Image
A wide area giving plenty of room for comfortable fishing....the drawback from this mark is the close proximatey to the lock gates, meaning you will have to reel in and stop fishing when the ships e.t.c are coming in and out of the dock......
Image
You will also see a line of "buffers" where tugs sometimes tie up waiting to enter the dock, though this is fairly rare.
Image
50yds along from the Chains is the spot where George Crane won a lot of matches in the original winter leagues of the 80`s....he always fished by the first set of steps with standard gear/baits but was very hard to beat..
Image
Next spot is the "Scaffold"...popular as you don`t need a rod rest, but fishes the same as most of the stretch....
Image
20yds from the end of the platform is probably my favourite spot,as i`ve always done well in matches from here....also if the wind is in the right direction you can get a touch of shelter behind the steps...
Image

Right at the end of the platform is another nice spot with some protection from the wind.....

As with all fishing from the platform marks, you have to be very careful, especially after dark,as it`s all too easy to fall over the edge if not concentrating, and it`s a good idea to tie your rodstand to the rail which runs along the wall.
The second section of the Alex gives the angler safe fishing from behind a 4ft wall and as such is popular with young n older anglers. The first part is affectionately known as "D1ckhead Corner".....

Landing bigger fish from here is more difficult than from the platform, and a good dropnet is handy to have.
Plenty of room, but it can be very snaggy in the middle section....
Image
At the far end is another popular spot as it`s the end peg.....

Just after the end peg is this sign.....

Please respect the boundaries shown .....i`ve fished the Alex for 35 years and seen cars parked by the dock wall get hit by leads,so park up against the old warehouse walls so as not to inconvenience any dock traffic and stay safe.
Directions....Go in at the Freeport Gate at Seaforth container base...from M57/M58 follow A5036 all the way to the bottom (signposted for All Docks)...at the roundabout/flyover you turn right towards Crosby and turn off for the Freeport which you will clearly see in front of you...go through the barrier and take the first left turn after the MD&HCo building...follow the signs for Langton Cruise Terminal until you go over the dock bridge...the Alex Wall will now be in front of you...turn left for the parking area and choose your spot.

From Liverpool city centre, follow for A565 Crosby until you come to the flyover, where you come off and bear left for the Freeport.
You need a permit to fish from the Alex Wall...p.m or e-mail me for details
winter fishing sucks
