Round 3 Result and Report

A competitive yet informal set of matches in and around the Mersey. With only 2 fish to count,it`s a good way to get in to match angling.

Longest Fish Pool - Adam Roper/Gary Swift/Jeff White - Codling 44cm (£7.33 each)

Round 3 of this years WSF Winter League saw us on the Liverpool side of the river for the first time and the first of two visits this winter to Otterspool.

It was an overcast and damp morning in the Jericho Lane car park as people began to arrive however there was never the less another really good turn out with 23 anglers in attendance as we prepared to do the draw and walk off down to the prom...................

Image

We were fishing the stretch from the pump house down to the black anchor and due to the larger tide we left a bit more space between each of the pegs. There was no-one else fishing which meant there was plenty of space for everyone to fish effectively and deal with the flow. All in was soon called and we were underway................

Image

As ever at this venue the Codling tend to show early and no sooner had my first bait settled on the bottom the rod tip was banging away and bingo, a nice fish of 44cm came over the railings..............

Image

Crabs were stripping the baits quickly all along the stretch meaning that regular casts were required to keep a bait fishing effectively. Around 30 minutes later the next Codling put in an appearance, this time to Brian Roper with a 43cm fish.....................

Image

There was not much else happening in the first hour with one or two people finding Whiting or smaller Codling whilst many were still waiting to get off the mark. There were then two more fish taken in quick succession with Gary Swift taking a share of the lead with a 44cm Codling of his own and Dylan Kensall getting into the mix at the pump house end of the stretch with this 41cm fish.......................

Image

As the tide reached the top of the flood the Whiting came onto the feed and more and more people were now finding in-size fish. There were some really clean plump Whiting being taken however the Codling were also still feeding with Steve Duffy finding one of 41cm and Dave Roberts then getting in on the act with this fish of 43cm.......................

Image

Paul Tucker and Alex Colston then both managed to find Dogfish to get themselves right in the hunt it was just going to come down to whether anyone could find that elusive flat fish to take the overall win. The half an hour before high water allowed a brief window for people to go long out onto the sand to try and find a flat fish however this just produced more Whiting and smaller Codling. With nobody able to make the combo this meant it was a three way split at the top of the leaderboard with Gary, Jeff and myself taking the shared spoils.
