Round 8 saw us back at the mouth of the Mersey at the T-Groyne in search of Plaice as the bonus species for this match. 13 Anglers again turned out for this one as we now head towards the conclusion of this years WSF Summer League. Conditions were decidedly miserable with drizzle and a strong onshore breeze making things difficult and less than comfortable.........................

Hopes were high that the good surf could potentially bring a few school Bass into the equation however it was clear from the off that there were no fish of any species present in the choppy shallow water of the bay between the groynes. Crab activity was fierce with baits being stripped from the hooks and this coupled with heavy weed presence in the water made the conditions trying for all involved.

All manner of baits were tried including fresh peeler by those who had it along with freshly pumped blow lug straight out of the sand and onto the hook but there were simply no fish their to catch. Nobody was reporting even a bite.

As we approached low water people were already counting the minutes down to the end of the match however as the flood started the unthinkable happened and someone had a bite. Roy Schofield has been Mr Consistent this year and yet again he had managed to do what no one else could to that point and find a fish. This nice Flounder of 36cm was worth its weight in gold.......................

Image

This gave the other 12 lads at least a glimmer of hope going into the final 45 minutes and everyone sent out fresh baits with the hope of getting into the money. There was however no more action until the last cast when Richie Fisher said to me he thought he had a knock and this indeed turned out to be the case as he too then beached a Flounder at 32cm to get himself in the frame and in the money..........................

So that was that and another extremely difficult day at the office with Roy Schofield yet again coming out on top with Richie Fisher a hard fished second with these two the only anglers to catch on a very challenging day weather wise and also on the fish front.

It’s soul destroying when the fish simply aren’t present but well done indeed to Roy and Richie for scratching one out
