Longest Fish Pool - Dave Radcliffe.......Whiting 38cm (£27)

So this years WSF Winter League got underway on a very un-winter like afternoon at a sunny and mild Vale Park with a fantastic turn seeing 27 anglers looking to open their account with a flat and a round combo as per the format of this league.

With it being a small tide we had to wait a little longer than expected to get out onto the bank however this gave everyone the chance for a chat and it was great to see plenty of new faces joining the regulars. If these numbers turn out for every match then it will make for a really interesting and competitive league.

I decided that a group photo was more practical than marching down the line taking 27 pictures so here are the lads who fished this years opening fixture....................

Image

The feeling was that there would be Rays and Dogs on offer as well as plenty of Whiting for the round fish with Dabs and maybe a late Plaice or a Flounder on offer for the flat fish for the card.

There were plenty of fish from the off but sadly not the Rays or even the Dogs in the numbers that we had hoped. It was Whiting city with everyone taking single and double shots every cast with a good average size of around 30-35cm along with some nice specimen fish of over a pound including the best Whiting of the day of 38cm for Dave Radcliffe which would be enough to see him take the longest fish pool for the day.

Only two Rays showed, one for me and one for Ste Atkinson and both were small at 32cm so these would be good enough to feature in the overall running. That meant that the holy grail for the Round fish on the card became a Dogfish. There were a few up and down the stretch but they were not appearing in any great numbers. Roy Schofield then demonstrated how quickly things can change in this format going from having a blank card to having a flat and a round on his card in a single cast.................................

Image

With nobody on anything better than a 40cm Doggie for their Round fish it was going to come down to who could find the better flat fish that would decide the overall outcome. There were a few Dabs about but it was going to need something better to get into the money. Ben Dobson was the first to find a better flat fish in the form of this 31cm Plaice.........................

Image

There were a few people feeling thankful that we have moved to a 6 from 8 scores to count format as combos were frustratingly hard to find by some however at the business end it was hotting up as Paul Argent had also found a Flounder of 29cm to put himself in the mix however Dylan Kensall was the man to steal the show as he dropped in close with an Urfe rig to find the best flat fish of the day in the form of this 32cm Plaice which coupled with his Dogfish was enough to give him the opening round win...........................

The action now continues in two weeks time at Otterspool Jericho Lane for Round 2.

If people concentrated on the REALLY important things in life....... There would be a shortage of fishing rods and reels
