Preview Round 5 Sunday June 22nd...Rock Channel

Postby Big Kev » Sun May 18, 2014 8:28 pm

Apologies to any unfit/older anglers, but this match is all about catching smoothies, and as such it requires a long yomp to reach the favoured areas. In order to give us the best chance of getting amongst the hounds,we need to get out on the bank asap as the first hour is often the main feeding period. The match will start at noon, regardless of whether you are still making your way out,so if you don`t agree with that, then don`t fish it.Sorry to be blunt, but the opportunity to catch these fish does`nt come round too often,so we want to make the most of it. There`s still plenty of time for latecomers to catch, but if the hounds are in,you could be behind before you get set up....conversely,the hounds may not show and any anglers stopping short could easily win the match with dabs, flounders and plaice.
Venue info HERE
In my opinion you will be fortunate to catch a smut on anything but crab, fresh or frozen.....obviously chest waders are a must to get across the first gulley...it`s extremely rare to find a snag out on the bank,so travel as light as possible and make sure you put phones/cameras e.t.c in waterproof bags...every year someone`s phone gets a soaking on the way out.
Worth noting in my last session ,i did not catch until 1 hour 15 mins before low,so it`s not all doom n gloom if you`re a little late getting out

A nice cold tinny in your rucksack will seem like the greatest idea you`ve ever had, after making the trek out to the bank

A few years ago we used to get good numbers of rays, which came on the feed after the hounds had stopped, but recently they`ve been pretty scarce out there....always a chance of snaring one though.

Booking on will be on the prom by the T-groyne from 10.30am til 11.00am,so please get there in plenty of time.....due to the logistics of this match, any late arrivals will not be able to enter. For measuring smuts,it might be easier to have a flexible tape measure,or length of string to hold from one end of the smut to the other, then transfer that to your usual match measure.....the blue Ikea bags are handy to pack and use as a weigh sling,so as not to damage the fish.

This is a ray measured in a recent Sefton match....

It is important to note that any rays caught in WSF/BLAS matches are measured across the wings, and not as shown in the above pic
