Thanks Trishy, there are so many on the market and just having turned the fearsome 60 :cry: I am looking to have a go with a new fixed spool spending some of my birthday money as I have always used multipliers in the past and all the advice here has been very informative.
Decision made, time to order now!

The new Penn Battle LC 8000 due December 2015, hope it's as good as its smaller 3000-4000 sized brothers. One to watch if your after a new reel for Xmas..

After many years in the game my biggest concerns are:
Can you get parts and service from the UK.
How robust is the reel.

and... have I used one and serviced one myself before. So what I do is buy shimano front drag reels which are the same models i've used previously. I then know how to service them, I can get spares from Felindre and if a reel dies it then becomes my own spares collection. This also means I only used tried and trusted reels, I certainly wouldnt ever buy new models. Tried and trusted reels also hold their value.

Same goes for multies. No expensive bleeding edge stuff for me tyvm.
