Question About My Akios S-Line 656CTM

Postby Wildgoose » Fri Apr 25, 2014 12:37 pm

I've decided to buy a new reel as my old green Abu 6500 is now showing it's age and I've been really impressed with the new Akios range.

I managed to find a dealer on the internet selling a brand new Akios 656 for £90. Couldn't resist it, so snapped up a bargain!!

The reel arrived yesterday and I have to say, I am very impressed both with general smoothness and build quality of this product. I've not used it yet but the first impressions are that it is superior product to the old green 6500 ABU - never thought I'd be saying that!!

I have a question please:-
The picture of the Akios reel on the dealers website showed it with 2 dark grey endplates. However, my reel has 2 polished chromed end plates?

Can anybody explain if there's been a specification change or have I got just another 656 variant?

I think the early model had the grey endplates.

One other question for the akios experts out there:-

I'm not a big caster but would expect to reliably get over 75m with a bit of effort.
So is it adviseable to use this reel straight out of the box or do I strip, flush and rocket fuel the bearings first?

I'm not interested in doing anything else at this stage like discarding brake blocks or removing magnets, so no need to go there:)

Really pleased with it and can't get over how silky smooth everything is - probably an indication of how my old green abu has deteriorated!

No need to do anything to your reel. Try spooling up with a strong low diameter line like this one.....

It makes a world of difference. ;)

OK thanks Richie. I've already spooled it up with Ultima F1 which is a great line too. If it's not successful, then I'll give the DIP Chromium a go.

The only line I've had difficulties with is Red Ice - but maybe it's because of my jerky casting style???

One of mine is spooled with F1 it's a great line. That Chromium line will give you a lot of extra poundage for the same diameter. My 20lb line is the same diameter as 8lb F1. ;)
