Just a quick word of warning to anglers looking to service the original Penn 525/535 series.By all means remove the left hand plate and clean beariings, shaft etc.Simple as.However if you remove the handle and gearing plate you will soon face raised blood pressure and hair loss. The brass spring collar that retains the free spool lever is the work of the devil, and almost impossible to replace as found.Having said that,I struggle to think of a more durable beach reel and find that a quick rinse after each session will serve the reel well.I do wander sometimes how have the redundant USA Penn staff fared after production moved to China.Off topic maybe, but am I alone in thinking this?

I sent my chrome rocket to Pete Coogan, after the gears went west, and after the repair and service, the reel was running smoother than a smooth thing sliding down smooth avenue....fully recommend getting your reel serviced by him every 6 months. I do my own service every couple of months and never have any probs with my reels, but whatever Pete does, makes the reel feel like brand new.
Christ Simon, you would`nt have to keep it...

Agree with you 100% Kev,I sent Pete a home converted Daiwa 6HM.Came back feeling like a better engineered reel!Nice and light the 6HM ,good for sessions holding the rod after the silver bars.
