Hello people of Anglesey fishing, i am a keen fisherman from young but i haven't been sea fishing in years, i used to go to this Breakwater regularly every year once a year for a 5 to 6 days worth of fishing. i will be going there this Friday and will be posted on the second bend of the breakwater. i have a few questions. 1: where are the Bait shops as it has been 7 years since i have been to holyhead...? 2:Where can i buy some tackle IE: Rods, reels and hooks etc? 3: any idea where there might be a nice place to stay over a night or 2. there are 5 of us and would like to be there for 3 days 2 nights. 7 years ago when i came i caught many nice fish form the Breakwater. 13lb Dogfish, 22lb Pollack, and lots of mackrel. using a variety of baits such as Mack, Rag, Lug and Squid. has anything changed over the years since i last came or is the same? Your answers can make this trip worth remembering for me as i have been planning to go fishing for years and finally i get my chance to go again. Please be kind and Tight lines everyone. Thank you

ok lads ok lads and lasses :O this is my first ever post on here but iv basically copyd it from MA but in th future ill post my sea reports straight to here, oh and hope my swerin dosent offed any ladies if there is any on or kids , ,, got to bull head , fri about 7pm the mark looked awsome as pics will hopfully show, i kipped in the tent for the night there it wqs boss, anway after a fairly short hike, and a trecherous climb down we had a good piece of rocks to put three pods up , bill and sam where hitting whiteing from the off, not massiv but never the less it was catching fish,,,,,,i pesonally lost rigs from the off a fortune in gear ,crack off after crack off, i thought sack this it was getting dark and i forgot me clear glasses so basically i was knacked,oh and i forgot the shock leader who would forget the shok leader i here you ask, well me , as it was my first time ever sea fishing ,,ah anyway i resorted to doing the cooking and farted around watching the experts ,,,i took mental notes as i was really keen to fish the saturday the best i could. the hike back back up to the car from the rocks was preitty tough going, with a load of gear on yer back,,,,,,,more so for bill as hes gettin on now ok so now its saturday we were on our way to the break water holyhead, ,,,its near empty got there for around 8am i think,,the sun cracked all day, awsome, better than the pics, we sat up and from the off bill and sam were hitting dogs ,,,,i was having a fookin knightmare again, couldent do a thing right, THEN i collected my self because i am not a quitter, i lost loads more riggs and bill and sam were having a good ald chuckle cant blame them , id of been on the deck laughin me codds off. i though rite, thats it ill fookin show em , so made a good rig, and some cocktail baits lugg ,sand eel, mussel shrimp encased in a squid,, sausage shaped , it was dripping juice , i couldent miss surley,,,,,my very first fish and aparently a big fish to, and a bit of a surprise for this time of year, even to the locals, ,,,,, the tip started to knock twice it knocked, i waited for one more knock then a gradual bend ,i hit it hard and pumped the rod, nothing but dred ,i thought i was snagged yet again so spent five mins rod bent propper under strrain,,,,,i cursed the fookin snag? an trusted sam to take the rod for a few seconds, the rod freed up a bit as i took cortroll of my rod again and i landed this crackin thorny, ,,cheers for the hand out there sam ,,,,,,we recon a double as it was like a sack of spuds ,,,seee what you lads think? it matters not what the weight was, it was my first ever fish from the sea, AND might i add even more special as me dad R.I.P. was born within eye shot of the mark (holy head) and came to lpool when he was five , and his dad and my forefather were all sea fishermen by trade, and many died at sea, so it was emotional, and i shouted out "cheers dad" haha! so i had the ray, and about six dogs, ace fish them,,,,sam had whiting, dogs, a few rockling, (5 bearded), a boss rred crab, and a flatty,,,,,,bill had loads of whiteing and dogs, all in all it was a megga weekend great company, a laugh, a few beers, bang on tucker, cheers billy-j ,im well and truly hookd soz for the long post lads, and if you dont like loads of pics soz again,,,,,,

Report:

The planned boat trip aboard conway star was cancelled due to the rough seas, so a last minute decision was made and the breakwater it was. I picked up Wrighty an Tony an set of about 6.30am Paul an ste were to meet us there. Stopped of at the bottom of ruallt hill to get the best breakfast buns money can buy an then of to holyhead, next stop winnies worms for bait an sundries. On the breakwater at the first bend an after half an hour it was obvious the macky were not playing, so just as paul an ste arrived the move was made to the end of the bw to play with the wrasse an then later fish from up top. Ste took a couple of wrasse and a micro codling, Tony had 3 micro pollack, Wrighty took 4 wrasse an a blenny, I lost a damm good wrasse cause it beat me to a snag but managed to take 5 smallish ones an I also caught my first octopus. Paul an ste decided to go back to the first bend an have another crack at the macky, on the way back now an we stopped to shoot the breeze with paul an ste, "got out" we said "na" says paul "just a headache for im" pointin at ste's head, who had some how managed to head but his 2oz lead in full flight, we helped get him cleaned up in between fits of laughter, anyhoo till next time, tight lines all.

fished the breakwater for the first time - went by train from manchester which took7 hours cos a cow got squashed on the line. Stayed in the Beach Hut Cafe B&B which was cheap and cheerful..then traisped over to the breakwater which seemed to take a life time..its so big that it doesnt look that far..but takes ages. Ledgered for several hours between 6pm and 10pm as tide was coming in with mack and blanked - just for something to do chucked a line in attached to a spool with a float and hook down the side of the wall and caught two nice sized whiting. ..went back next moring just after high tide and caught a doggie and nice fat mackeral (plus giant crab which I managed to hook in the joint of one leg). Only downside was the amount of crap people manage to leave behind them (3 stella bottles floated past me at one point).

Report:

Got there just as the tied was starting to come in around 7.30 baited up a 3 hook pennel with squid and lug, 2 of us pulled in a doggy each on 1st cast on the squid hooks. That was the order of the day realy with the distance casting. 2 of us decieded to set up light tackle and fished tight against the wall on rag worm. Between us we had 3 nice wrasse, 3 whiting, and 2 rockling. It was'nt a brilliant bag, but watching what was going on around us on what was a busy breakwater, we did'nt seem to do to bad. The only spoiler of the day was the wind could of been a bit kinder. tight lines everyone

28 of us went by coach to give the breakwater a go. We spread out pritty much the full lenghth of the wall. It did'nt seem to matter were you fished there were Doggys to keep you buzzy! The locals fished for the mac and seem to be doing ok. Our match was won with 15 doggys for Dave wright. We also had a species comp which was won by Vinny "Crabman". There was also whitting, Turbot, Mac, Flounder and some of the biggest spider crab ive ever seen....

arrived at the breakwater with my cousin about 8:30pm thursday on flood. set up using a cod pennel in the hope of something nice for tea, but nothing showing only doggies. changed over to a two hook flapper and carried on with the doggies and the odd whiting, saved the blank i suppose. meanwhile.... the bait traps had been out and catching plenty of big prawns small lobsters and crab, again nothing big enough to take apart from the juicy prawns. all the small fish we caught, ie pollack whiting poor cod and pout were used as conger bait, only resulting in one strap landed. tasted good though! come daylight we changed our rigs to three hook booms using chopped rag as bait, resulting in quite a few nice little wrasse. fished through till dinner time and decided to call it a day as we were both completely shattered. all in all a very enjoyable night and we will be back on the 18th...thursday. tight lines

Usually fish the breakwater but after reading the last post decided to try the same place - the ice machine in the little fishing harbour (head to ferry terminal and take the next turning off the mini-roundabout - Turkey Shore Road). Caught nothing at all - not even a nibble. By the way Johanna, the ship you saw docking there was Irish Ferries fast ferry 'Johnathan Swift', the HSS is Stena Line's fast craft 'Explorer' and docks at a specially built terminal out of the way.

Fished the inside of the breakwater on the last bend from low up for a couple of hours or so. 10 Whiting between 6-10 inches. Her indoors took seven of them and keeps reminding me. One point though - where's the doggies? The breakwater is usually crawling with them. Wondring wether the seal that hangs around by the first bend is eating them all. Still it's need is greater than ours. There is a new bait and tackle shop in Holyhead on William St (just behind and parallel to Market St which is the main st). Its called Winnie's Worms and is open 7 days a week 8 till late. Run by a local angler. Top bloke. Managed to fit a couple of hours in up to HW at the lighthouse end of the breakwater. On the way there was delighted to see two Seals in the harbour near the wall, this after having seen a school of Dolphins breifly near South Stack. Several anglers fishing the inside of the breakwater one or two reporting Pouting and small Pollock. When I got to the lighthouse platform there was another angler there who caught several small fish whilst I was setting up. We fished fairly close to each other using similar baits (Crab, Rag, Mackerel) though he was able to cast a considerable bit further than me. Over the next two hours (up to HW) I caught 4 Pouting and a Pollock of about 1lb. The guy next to me caught several Dogfish, 3 or 4 Pollock about the same size as mine and 1/2 dozen Pouting. He was a local lad who knew the breakwater well and told me that he considered the fishing to be poor there at this time of year, the colder months being much better. Hadn't realised how strong the current is around the lighthouse, had problems holding bottom at times. Also hadn't realised just how snaggy the ground is there close in. Noticed that ther local chap was using a lead lift and was fishing well beyong the strongest part of the current. Big casts a definate advantage. Beautiful evening, great scenery, RAF doing aeorobatics above us and plenty of passing shipping to watch. All in all very enjoyable. Tight Lines all.

Fished 2 hours of the ebb and 4hours flood. Had a few dogs and pin whiting on the ebb and then the flood started. The dogs arrived in force they were virtually crawling up the rods after the bait in the box !. As soon as the bait hit the bottom the tips were bouncing and this carried on until we ran out of bait. I ended up putting whole squid on to slow them down whilst I had a cig and coffee. No matter what bait or cocktail used the dogs pin whiting and crabs were straight onto it. Had a huge spider crab doubled up with a good doggy, had a right job trying to get them into the drop net. The crab measured 2' 6" across its claws when they opened up. Had a really enjoyable day, pity no fish to keep. Thanks to the two local lads who gave us spare bait after they got fed up of dogs and whiting. Report:

Fished at the far end off the lighthouse platform, fished up to high. Caught plenty of wrasse, pouting, pollack and dab. Also caught a massive spider crab and an equaly massive edible crab. People around us caught wrasse, doogies and pouting. Young girl with her dad was fishing with a hand line and caught a huge wrasse that was easy over 3lb and was probably the catch of the day if not the year (got a piccie if you want it). Now the bad news - a group of entrepeneurs have bought a train and intend to build a railway for tourists running from the museum, along the prom and to the end of the breakwater. They also intend to build some kind of maritime classroom at the end on the lighthouse platform. Obviously this will be built during the winter ready for next summer. As soon as more details appear in the local rag I will put on here as it will obviously affect the venue as a fishing mark.

Fished from noon friday 'till saturday morning when rain stopped play, (the idea was to go to Whitebeach for a few hours but we went home instead, drenched) Andy caught plenty of whiting and dogfish, I didn't catch one fish on a rod but did well in the lobster pots, 5 keepable sized lobsters, half a dozen small cuckoo wrasse, few three bearded rockling, (one 18" long) and numerous small ugly fish, same colour as the rockling but with big frog eyes? We both caught a few spider crabs during the session, and I foul hooked another lobster. Not a bad day out, (beats the hell out of Euro 2004!). r I beleive the mackerel have finally arrived, so we will be back in a few weeks to search them out!

Fished up from low tide during afternoon and early evening. Weather is sweltering at the moment and bares little relevance to TV weather reports.r Fished at the lighthouse. We caught one solitary pig-ugly weaver fish with the biggest mouth I have ever seen on something so small. People around us caught 2 wrasse, 2 doggies, and a dab, More varied species are now being caught here as opposed to the usual doggies and whitings. There is also a shoal of mullet cruising on the outside of the second bend (where the green lights are) at early evening if the tide is up. They are literally at the base of the wall. They are of a decent size, but haven't had a go for them yet. r Have also located a fantastic mullet and bass mark which is 'hidden' and known to very few. As soon as I've sorted out map grid references and directions I will publish on here.

Spent from low tide to near high tide (had to leave for "corrie" - you know the score). Fished at point 18. We caught 1 whiting on the inside (mack) and a pretty little wrasse on the outside (live lug). People were catching but not in great numbers. next people up from us caught 2 doggies . Up at the light house the haul was 1 codling, 1 octopus, 1 whiting and a doggie. It has been very poor here for a week or so and I think it's a combination of clear water, stonking hot weather, and very low, calm high tides. I've checked my tables and I reckon next weekend will be well sorted at this easy venue cos the tide is over a metre higher.

Got my tackle out on Saturday, first time in a long time, and its seems that I lost any knack that I had in weather forecasting (checking it before leaving helps!). It was a simple plan, head towards Ravens Point, catch a few mackerel and then use them as conger bait. When I got to Ravens point the weather/sea was borderline. I did manage to find myself a safe vantagepoint and get half a dozen mackerel, but the weather was just getting worse, more like January than July. So I had a change of plan, went to the chippy in Holyhead and on to the breakwater. Ended up with 5 doggies, 1 wrasse and 1 rockling, an average days fishing on a below average night, but damned good to be back out again.
